Deadly Landslides Strike Central Java, Indonesia: Rescue Operations Underway

Heavy rainfall in mid-November 2025 triggered devastating landslides in Indonesia's Central Java province, resulting in significant casualties and property damage. The most severe incidents occurred in the Cilacap and Banjarnegara districts, where rescue operations are ongoing amid challenging conditions.

On November 13, a landslide struck Cibeunying village in Cilacap district, burying 12 houses under debris ranging from 3 to 8 meters deep. As of November 17, at least 16 people have been confirmed dead, with seven individuals still missing. The depth of the debris has significantly hampered rescue efforts. M. Abdullah, chief of the local search and rescue agency, stated that excavators have been deployed to assist in the operation.

In a separate incident on November 15, another landslide occurred in Banjarnegara district, resulting in two fatalities and leaving 27 people missing. Approximately 30 homes and farmland were damaged in this event. The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) has reported that search and rescue operations are ongoing in both areas.

The BNPB has mobilized over 500 personnel, including police and military forces, to assist in the rescue operations. The agency has also deployed 22 excavators and 18 sniffer dogs to aid in locating and recovering victims. To mitigate further rainfall and support safer rescue efforts, BNPB is utilizing cloud seeding technology. BNPB Head Suharyanto emphasized the urgency of relocating 28 households living in landslide-prone areas in Cilacap district, stating, "The regional government has prepared the relocation site."

These disasters coincide with Indonesia's wet season, which began in September and is expected to last until April, increasing the risk of extreme weather events such as heavy rainfall and flooding. Earlier in the year, a similar disaster in Pekalongan, another city in Central Java, claimed the lives of at least 25 people.

The loss of life and destruction of homes have left communities devastated, with many residents displaced and in need of immediate assistance. The damage to homes and farmland underscores the vulnerability of infrastructure in disaster-prone areas and the need for improved resilience measures. The swift deployment of rescue personnel and equipment, along with plans for relocation, reflect the government's commitment to disaster response and mitigation.

As search and rescue operations continue, authorities are urging residents in vulnerable areas to remain vigilant and adhere to safety advisories.
