General Dynamics Electric Boat Wins $71.6 Billion in Navy Submarine Contracts

General Dynamics Electric Boat said Wednesday it received contract awards tied to the construction of 14 submarines — five Columbia-class and nine Virginia-class — as part of a broader $76.6 billion Navy contract announcement.

In a company press release dated July 29, Electric Boat said it was awarded $29.5 billion for five additional Columbia-class submarines and $42.1 billion for nine additional Virginia-class submarines, along with additional support for shipyard infrastructure. The two disclosed submarine awards total $71.6 billion, and the company said they were made “as part of today’s $76.6 billion Navy contract announcement.”

The scale of the package gives Electric Boat visibility across two of the Navy’s most important submarine programs and points to sustained demand for shipyard capacity, suppliers and labor. Mark Rayha, president of General Dynamics Electric Boat, said in the release: “These important contract modifications provide Electric Boat and our suppliers with the demand certainty we need to continue investing in capacity and hiring the workforce necessary to ensure we deliver these important national security assets on schedule.”

Electric Boat, headquartered in Groton, Connecticut, says it employs more than 27,000 people.

The Columbia-class program is the Navy’s effort to replace the aging Ohio-class ballistic missile submarines, which carry nuclear missiles as part of the U.S. strategic deterrent. In its May 2026 shipbuilding plan, the Navy described Columbia as its top shipbuilding priority and a “once-in-a-generation recapitalization.” The Navy’s program of record calls for a minimum of 12 submarines.

The Virginia-class is the Navy’s fast-attack submarine program, used for missions such as tracking adversaries, gathering intelligence and supporting other naval operations. The May 2026 shipbuilding plan said the Navy is using multiboat and multiyear procurement to help stabilize the submarine industrial base, with a goal of reaching a production rate of at least one Columbia-class boat and two Virginia-class boats per year by fiscal 2031.

That backdrop helps explain the significance of a same-day award package spanning both classes. By pairing submarine construction awards with support for shipyard infrastructure, the announcement underscores the Navy’s need not just to order boats, but to expand the capacity needed to build them on schedule.

General Dynamics, Electric Boat’s parent company, said in the same release that it is headquartered in Reston, Virginia, employs more than 120,000 people and generated $52.6 billion in 2025 revenue.

For Electric Boat, the awards mark a major execution step in the Navy’s long-term submarine building plan. The company’s announcement makes clear that the work covers 14 submarines in total and is intended to support the workforce and supplier investments needed to carry out that plan.
