Toronto International Film Festival Celebrates 50th Edition: Premieres, Tributes, and Special Programs

The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) is set to celebrate its 50th edition from September 4 to 14, 2025, in Toronto, Ontario. As North America's largest film festival, TIFF has been a pivotal platform for launching films into the awards season since its inception in 1976.

The festival will open with the world premiere of "John Candy: I Like Me," a documentary directed by Colin Hanks and produced by Ryan Reynolds. This film pays tribute to the beloved Canadian actor and comedian John Candy. The closing night will feature "Peak Everything," directed by Canadian filmmaker Anne Émond.

Among the notable world premieres is "Good Fortune," marking Aziz Ansari's directorial debut. The film stars Keanu Reeves as an angel attempting to teach a struggling man, portrayed by Ansari, a lesson. Another anticipated debut is "Christy," directed by David Michôd, featuring Sydney Sweeney as boxer Christy Martin, chronicling her journey in the boxing world. Alice Winocour's "Couture" stars Angelina Jolie as an American filmmaker attending Paris Fashion Week, exploring the intersections of fashion and cinema. Rian Johnson's "Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery," the third installment in the "Knives Out" series, continues the adventures of detective Benoit Blanc.

Other premieres include Derek Cianfrance's "Roofman," starring Channing Tatum as a struggling father who turns to theft; Nia DaCosta's "Hedda," an adaptation of Henrik Ibsen's play featuring Tessa Thompson; Nicholas Hytner's "The Choral," a World War I drama starring Ralph Fiennes; and Paul Greengrass' "The Lost Bus," with Matthew McConaughey.

In addition to these premieres, TIFF is introducing "The TIFF Story in 50 Films," a special series curated by CEO Cameron Bailey. This program highlights 50 past Canadian and international films that have played a significant role in the festival's history. Bailey stated, "The TIFF Story in 50 Films is more than a retrospective — it’s a celebration of the landmark moments that have defined our Festival’s legacy." The series will run from June to August 2025 at the TIFF Lightbox.

TIFF has also renewed its sponsorship deal with Rogers Communications for three years through 2027. This partnership includes a television special to air on Citytv, celebrating the festival's 50th edition. Tony Staffieri, CEO of Rogers, expressed, "We are committed to supporting world-class film and cinema and bringing the best in entertainment to Canadians."

The festival's 50th edition underscores its enduring influence in the cinematic world, continuing to serve as a launchpad for films entering the awards season and reflecting its commitment to diverse storytelling.
