God of War: Laufey Gets Feb. 16, 2027 Release; Studio Says Kratos Sequel Will Follow

Santa Monica Studio used its God of War panel at San Diego Comic-Con on Friday to deliver two distinct updates about the series: God of War: Laufey now has a release date, and studio creative lead Cory Barlog said a Kratos-led follow-up will come after it and tie directly into its story.

The clearer, concrete announcement was for Laufey. Santa Monica Studio and PlayStation said the PlayStation 5 game will launch Feb. 16, 2027, a date PlayStation also pushed in promotional copy reproduced by multiple outlets: “Enter the afterlife of the gods when God of War Laufey launches on PS5 February 16, 2027.” The separate Kratos update was more limited. No title, release window, platform list or other formal details were announced for that future game.

Barlog, identified in reports from the panel as Santa Monica Studio’s head of creative, described Laufey as part of a larger plan for the franchise. “I wanted to show an extension of this world where the characters you’ll encounter are unexpected,” he said, according to Video Games Chronicle. “Laufey is a continuation of what came before and to prepare and expand what comes next.” Reporting from multiple gaming outlets, including Video Games Chronicle and Gematsu, said Barlog also told the audience that the next God of War game after Laufey will star Kratos and connect directly to Laufey’s story.

That distinction matters. Friday’s panel did not amount to a full standalone unveiling of a new Kratos game with a name, date or platforms. Instead, it served as confirmation that a Kratos-centered entry is in the works after Laufey and that Santa Monica Studio sees the two projects as directly linked.

For fans trying to place the news, God of War: Laufey is not a surprise reveal. The game was first announced during a PlayStation State of Play on June 2, 2026, when Sony also showed extended gameplay. It shifts the focus away from the series’ usual lead, centering on Laufey, also known as Faye.

That shift is why Barlog’s comments are significant. Kratos has long been the face of God of War and most recently headlined 2022’s God of War Ragnarök. By confirming that a Kratos-led game will follow Laufey, Santa Monica Studio signaled that the character remains central to the franchise’s near-term direction — even if the studio stopped well short of formally announcing what that next game will be.
