Belgium Hosts Europalia España 2025 Featuring Spanish Cultural Heritage

Belgium is set to host the 30th edition of the Europalia arts festival from October 8, 2025, to February 1, 2026, with Spain as the guest country. This biennial event will feature over 200 activities across various Belgian cities, highlighting Spain's rich cultural heritage through visual arts, architecture, theater, dance, music, performance, film, and literature. Central to the festival is the legacy of Francisco de Goya, whose works continue to resonate in contemporary art.

The festival's centerpiece, "Luz y Sombra: Goya and Spanish Realism," will be exhibited at Bozar in Brussels from October 8, 2025, to January 11, 2026. This exhibition will showcase Goya's masterpieces alongside works by his contemporaries and subsequent generations, including artists like José Gutiérrez Solana, Pablo Picasso, and Antonio Saura. Additionally, contemporary artists such as Asunción Molinos Gordo, Francisco López, and Albert Serra will present new creations, demonstrating the enduring relevance of Goya's legacy.

Founded in 1969, Europalia is a biennial festival dedicated to promoting the culture and arts of a specific country or theme. Spain was previously the guest country in 1985, coinciding with its impending entry into the then European Economic Community. The 2025 edition, occurring 40 years later, offers a unique opportunity to reflect on Spain's historical trajectory and its integration into the European Union.

The festival's diverse program includes approximately 10 exhibitions, around 70 projects encompassing theater, dance, and performance art, 40 musical activities featuring both traditional and contemporary Spanish music, 50 film screenings showcasing Spanish cinema, 30 initiatives focusing on Spanish literature and intellectual discourse, and 20 additional activities covering various artistic expressions. The festival will feature approximately 250 artists, ranging from established figures to emerging talents, representing the diversity of Spain's regions and artistic perspectives.

The festival is organized by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID), in collaboration with Acción Cultural Española (AC/E), the Ministry of Culture, the Instituto Cervantes, and the Commissioner for the celebration of 50 years of Spain in Freedom. These institutions have coordinated to present a comprehensive program that reflects Spain's cultural evolution and its contributions to the global arts scene.
