Arizona Man Indicted for Arson at Jewish Community Center, Highlighting Rising Threats to Religious Institutions

On November 18, 2025, a federal grand jury in Phoenix indicted Everardo Gregorio, 31, of Casa Grande, Arizona, on charges of obstructing the free exercise of religious beliefs by fire. This indictment stems from a March 3, 2025, arson that severely damaged the Khal Chasidim Jewish Community Center in Casa Grande.

The fire, which ignited around 4:53 a.m., caused extensive damage to the synagogue's worship area, as well as a kosher grocery store and restaurant housed within the same building. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. Surveillance footage reportedly showed Gregorio near the scene multiple times during the night of the incident. He was arrested on March 5, 2025, and initially charged with arson by the Pinal County Attorney’s Office.

The Khal Chasidim Jewish Community Center serves as a vital hub for the local Jewish community, offering religious services and essential amenities. The fire's destruction has deeply affected the community. Rabbi Mendy Deitch expressed resilience, stating, "We are devastated, but we are not broken... we will rebuild it."

This incident is not isolated. In October 2024, St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Casa Grande was also destroyed in an arson attack. The suspect in that case remains unidentified. The church, built in 1960, suffered significant damage, leading to its demolition in August 2025. Parishioners expressed sorrow over the loss but remained hopeful for rebuilding.

Gregorio's federal indictment underscores the severity with which hate crimes are prosecuted. The charge of obstructing the free exercise of religious beliefs by fire reflects the federal commitment to protecting religious freedoms. The case is being investigated by the FBI, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Casa Grande Police Department.

If convicted on the federal charge, Gregorio faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. The consecutive arson attacks on religious institutions in Casa Grande highlight a disturbing trend that raises concerns about the safety and security of faith communities. Despite the devastation, both the Jewish and Catholic communities in Casa Grande have demonstrated remarkable resilience, with plans to rebuild and continue their religious practices.

These incidents prompt a reevaluation of the measures in place to protect religious institutions and the need for community engagement to prevent future attacks. The indictment of Everardo Gregorio for the arson of the Khal Chasidim synagogue serves as a pivotal moment for Casa Grande, bringing to light the challenges faced by religious communities in ensuring their safety and the importance of upholding religious freedoms. As legal proceedings unfold, the community's response and resilience will be crucial in shaping the path forward.
