Israeli Airstrike in Beirut Kills Hezbollah Chief of Staff, Escalating Regional Tensions

On November 23, 2025, an Israeli airstrike targeted a building in Beirut's Haret Hreik neighborhood, resulting in the deaths of five individuals, including Hezbollah's Chief of Staff, Haytham Ali Tabatabai. Haytham Ali Tabatabai, also known as Abu Ali Tabatabai, was a prominent figure within Hezbollah. Born in 1968 in Beirut, he served as the commander of the Radwan Force, Hezbollah's elite special forces unit, and was a senior figure in Unit 3800, involved in the group's activities across Syria, Yemen, and Iraq. In 2016, the U.S. Department of State designated him as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist.

In response to the airstrike, Hezbollah's Deputy Leader, Naim Qassem, delivered a televised statement on November 28, condemning the attack as a "blatant aggression and a heinous crime." He asserted Hezbollah's right to retaliate, stating, "We have the right to respond, and we will determine the timing for that."

The Lebanese government has also reacted strongly. President Joseph Aoun condemned the strike and called for international intervention to halt Israeli attacks. The Lebanese army has increased its presence along the border with Israel, dismantling several Hezbollah posts and shutting down smuggling routes. Brigadier General Nicolas Thabet praised the army's efforts, stating, "Our troops have made significant sacrifices to secure this challenging and danger-prone border region."

This incident is the first Israeli airstrike on Beirut's southern suburbs since a truce was established in November 2024, which ended a 14-month conflict between Israel and Hezbollah. The Haret Hreik neighborhood, a known Hezbollah stronghold, was previously targeted during the 2006 Lebanon War.

International reactions have been swift. France expressed deep concern over the airstrike, emphasizing the risk of escalation in an already tense situation. The United Nations warned that renewed hostilities could have devastating consequences for civilians on both sides of the Lebanon-Israel border.

The airstrike has heightened concerns about regional stability. The Lebanese army's increased presence along the border and the dismantling of Hezbollah posts indicate efforts to prevent further escalation.
