Overwatch Season 2 'Summit' launches with new hero Sierra, post‑match accolades and Switch 2 upgrade
Blizzard is rolling out the next stage of its Overwatch relaunch today, as Season 2, titled “Summit,” goes live at about 11 a.m. PT / 2 p.m. ET / 7 p.m. GMT with a new damage hero, Sierra, and the long‑requested return of post‑match accolades. The update is part of the company’s 2026 “dropped the 2” reset and coincides with a new Nintendo Switch 2 version, underscoring an aggressive push to keep recent player momentum going.
Season 2 sits within the year‑long “Reign of Talon” storyline that began with February’s relaunch, when Blizzard removed the “2” from the game’s name, added five heroes at once and promised 10 new heroes across 2026. Sierra is the latest step in that plan.
Sierra is a damage‑class hero with a recon subrole passive that reveals enemies she injures when they fall below half health. In Overwatch lore, she serves as head of security at Watchpoint: Grand Mesa and is positioned as a longtime opponent of the villainous Talon organization. Her personal story focuses on investigating her mother, described as the first test subject in the Soldier Enhancement Program, linking her to series mainstays Jack Morrison (Soldier: 76) and Gabriel Reyes.
Her core kit is built around aim‑assistance and mobility. Sierra’s Helix Rifle is an automatic weapon whose spiral bullet pattern becomes more accurate the longer it fires. Tracking Shot marks a single enemy, causing her rifle shots to home in on that target. Anchor Drone lets her deploy a drone in mid‑air that she can grapple or launch toward, giving her agile repositioning options. Tremor Charge is a grenade that creates a shockwave on impact, and her Trailblazer ultimate sends out a drone that flies forward and bombards enemies with explosives.
Players can tune her playstyle through perks. Minor perks include Full Flight, which extends Anchor Drone’s flight and grapple range by 25%, and Tight Grip, which makes the rifle’s spread tighten faster and widen more slowly. Major perks include Medi‑Drone, allowing Anchor Drones to hold a small health pack for her, and Locked In, which temporarily boosts attack speed after using Tracking Shot. Early specialist coverage has raised concerns that combining auto‑tracking with strong mobility could make Sierra a dominant or overtuned pick in competitive play.
Sierra’s debut is tied directly into Operation: Grand Mesa, a limited‑time player‑versus‑environment event running from April 14 through May 4. Blizzard is encouraging players to, “Join Operation: Grand Mesa and step into Sierra’s story from season launch tomorrow until May 4!” by completing challenges that unlock four story beats. The event grants cosmetic rewards such as voice lines, a name card, a rare title, sprays, Battle Pass tier skips and loot boxes, while revealing more about Sierra and the Grand Mesa facility as lore unlocks alongside progress.
Another major change is the return of post‑match accolades, a social feature removed during the transition from the original Overwatch to Overwatch 2 in 2023. After Play of the Game, players will again have a brief window to vote for a standout teammate or opponent, with the chosen player highlighted as MVP via an animated spotlight. Blizzard says, “Post Match Accolades let you recognize impact beyond the battle. After Play of the Game, you’ll have a short window to vote for the teammate or opponent who really stood out, with the MVP getting a dynamic, animated spotlight before the match wraps.” Players can also join post‑match voice chat during this sequence, part of a wider effort to restore social systems that many fans associated with the original game.
On the map side, the Antarctic Peninsula Control map returns after a full rework. The Icebreaker sub‑map has stronger ship theming, streamlined flanking routes and new alternate paths that funnel players toward the objective. Research Station’s central choke has been opened up, with a new back‑side flank to create more offensive options. Underground now features higher ceilings, simplified layouts and clearer staging areas to improve visibility and how fights unfold. The changes are intended to create cleaner engagements after the map was pulled from rotation in late 2025.
Cosmetics remain a central pillar of the seasonal model. Summit’s mythic hero skin is Soldier: 76 “Volted Overdrive,” featuring an electric, cybernetic style and four levels of customization, including ability visual effect toggles, two hairstyles, two colorways and ambient sparks. Genji receives a mythic weapon‑only skin, “Sumi‑Ichimonji,” which adds ink and dragon motifs, reactive splatter effects, flourish animations on eliminations and distinctive kill visuals.
A cherry‑blossom‑themed “Sakura Collection” of legendary skins for Hanzo, Genji, Freja, Juno, Emre and Junker Queen will be in the in‑game shop from April 14 to May 4. Blizzard is also bringing back its collaboration with K‑pop group LE SSERAFIM, offering a bundle with all 15 of the event’s legendary skins from April 14–27. Later in the season, a Diablo crossover will add a Mephisto‑inspired skin for tank hero Ramattra.
The Season 2 Battle Pass carries a “Spring Fairy” theme, with new legendary skins for Ashe, Lifeweaver, Moira, Wuyang and Echo. An Ultimate Battle Pass upgrade adds Spring Fairy Illari and Painter Sierra, along with 20 tier skips and 2,000 Overwatch Coins. Across the pass, players can earn up to 80 Mythic Prisms, loot boxes and other cosmetics.
Blizzard is also updating Stadium mode, its separate competitive format. Ramattra becomes playable there for the first time, while support hero Juno receives a rework aimed at balance and reliability. Lijiang Night Market joins as a new Control map, and Jetpack Cat is planned as a midseason Stadium addition. Instead of hard seasonal resets, Stadium will shift to a decay system intended to make ranking transitions less abrupt.
Hero‑specific perks are being refreshed across the roster. Ramattra gains Prolonged Barrier, a minor perk that increases the size and duration of his Void Barrier by 25%. Pharah can add explosion damage to Concussive Blast. Reaper’s new major perk, Trigger Finger, refreshes Dire Triggers’ cooldown when he uses an ability and reloads. Soldier: 76 gets Agility Training, a major perk that ramps his sprint speed up to 60% after two seconds, and Mercy’s Double Dose gives her Flash Heal an additional charge.
Parallel to the seasonal content, Blizzard is launching Overwatch on Nintendo Switch 2. The new version targets up to 60 frames per second in both handheld and docked modes, with upgraded visuals and audio compared with the original Switch release, according to Blizzard and outlet reports.
For Blizzard, Season 2 is less about a single headline feature than about reinforcing that the February relaunch is an ongoing shift. The studio is tying each new hero to a story chapter, restoring quality‑of‑life and social tools such as accolades, and leaning on cosmetics and crossovers to keep players engaged between balance patches. With Sierra’s auto‑tracking and mobility already drawing attention from competitive observers, Summit will test whether Blizzard can maintain its faster release cadence while keeping the game’s evolving meta in check.
