Pompano Beach UNFI Warehouse Ratifies First Teamsters Contract with 31% Raise
More than 200 warehouse workers at United Natural Foods Inc.’s Pompano Beach, Florida, distribution facility have ratified a five-year first union contract that includes a 31% wage increase over the life of the deal, access to Teamsters health care and a pension plan, according to the Teamsters. The workers are represented by Teamsters Local 769.
The agreement followed a strike authorization announced by the union on April 1 and avoided a walkout at a strategically important site in UNFI’s distribution network. The Teamsters said the contract ratification came after what it described as a credible strike threat.
According to the union, the contract also provides entry into the Teamsters Western Conference Pension Plan, just-cause protections against discipline or firing without a valid reason, grievance and arbitration procedures for resolving disputes, and long-term job security protections. The workers organized last year, and National Labor Relations Board records show representation-case activity involving the Pompano Beach operation in mid-2025.
The outcome carries weight beyond one South Florida warehouse because UNFI is a major North American grocery wholesaler. Company investor materials say it serves more than 30,000 customer locations and operates dozens of distribution centers. UNFI also has said it is the primary distributor for Amazon-owned Whole Foods Market and announced a multi-year extension of that relationship in 2024, making labor stability at its facilities relevant to a broader grocery supply chain.
The Pompano Beach ratification also fits into a wider Teamsters organizing effort at UNFI. The union says it has organized more than 3,500 UNFI workers since 2022, bringing its membership at the company to more than 5,500 nationwide. The union has described the Florida facility as part of that broader push, rather than an isolated campaign.
“Ratifying our first Teamsters contract is a proud moment for every worker in this warehouse,” Vedjo Williamceau, a UNFI worker and Local 769 negotiating-committee member, said in a Teamsters release.
Before the ratification, UNFI said it had been bargaining “in good faith” for six months and was seeking a competitive first contract. In a statement reported by Supermarket News on April 3, the company said it had contingency plans to keep the facility operating if a strike occurred and that it remained committed to reaching a fair agreement.
