Shai Gilgeous-Alexander wins 2025-26 NBA MVP, his second straight

·

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has won the 2025-26 KIA NBA Most Valuable Player award, giving the Oklahoma City Thunder star his second straight MVP after another dominant regular season on the league’s top team.

The NBA confirmed the result Sunday in a post on its official Bluesky account, writing: “The 2025-26 KIA NBA MVP is... Shai Gilgeous‑Alexander!” The league had scheduled the announcement for the Prime Video pregame show before Cavaliers-Pistons Game 7 at 7:30 p.m. ET. Before that on-air reveal, the news had already been publicly reported.

Gilgeous-Alexander’s case centered on elite production and team success. In 68 regular-season games, he averaged 31.1 points, 6.6 assists and 4.3 rebounds while shooting 55.3% from the field. Oklahoma City finished 64-18, the best regular-season record in the NBA.

The award is for the regular season, even though the announcement came during the playoffs as part of the league’s Sunday night broadcast window. Gilgeous-Alexander was again the engine of a Thunder team that separated itself from the rest of the league in the standings while he remained one of the NBA’s most efficient high-volume scorers.

His repeat win is the headline historical marker. Multiple outlet reports cited in the research said Gilgeous-Alexander became the 14th player in NBA history to win back-to-back MVP awards, a short list that underscores how rare consecutive wins are. For Gilgeous-Alexander, it cements a second consecutive season in which he stood at the center of both outstanding individual production and the NBA’s best regular-season record.
