Hurricanes rout Canadiens 6-1 to reach Stanley Cup Final

The Carolina Hurricanes are headed to the Stanley Cup Final for the first time since 2006 after a decisive 6-1 victory over the Montreal Canadiens in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Final on Friday night in Raleigh, North Carolina.

The win gave Carolina the series 4-1 and sent the Hurricanes into the NHL championship round for the third time in franchise history. They will face the Vegas Golden Knights, who advanced out of the Western Conference by sweeping the Colorado Avalanche and clinching that series on May 27.

Carolina turned the clincher into a rout early and never gave Montreal a path back into the game. The Hurricanes built a 5-0 lead before the Canadiens broke through in the third period, making this a comfortable closeout rather than a tense finish.

Taylor Hall and Logan Stankoven led the way offensively. Hall had a goal and two assists, while Stankoven added a goal and two assists as Carolina controlled the game from the opening stages.

Hall’s goal was set up by Stankoven and Jackson Blake. Stankoven scored on a play assisted by Hall and Alexander Nikishin. Blake also scored and added an assist, and Eric Robinson scored on a setup from William Carrier.

Shayne Gostisbehere added a power-play goal with assists from Seth Jarvis and Nikolaj Ehlers. Jarvis later scored late in the game and also had an assist, with Sebastian Aho and Andrei Svechnikov drawing assists on his goal.

Behind that support, Hurricanes goaltender Frederik Andersen stopped 23 of 24 shots. Montreal’s only goal came from Cole Caufield on the power play, with Lane Hutson earning the assist.

The result sends Carolina back to the Final after a 20-year wait. The Hurricanes previously reached the championship series in 2002 and 2006, winning the Stanley Cup in 2006. That remains the franchise’s only title, and it came with current coach Rod Brind’Amour serving as captain.

This trip, however, was secured with a game that left little doubt. Carolina seized control, piled up goals from throughout the lineup and closed out the Eastern Conference title on home ice with one of its most emphatic performances of the postseason.
