Adolis García to miss remainder of 2026 after right latissimus surgery
Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Adolis García will miss the rest of the 2026 season after MLB.com reported Thursday that he is scheduled to undergo right latissimus dorsi repair surgery on June 24.
MLB.com reported that García is expected to need six to eight months to recover and should be ready for the start of the 2027 season, making the injury season-ending for Philadelphia in 2026. “Phillies outfielder Adolis García will undergo right latissimus dorsi repair surgery next Wednesday, which will be performed by Dr. Anthony Romeo,” MLB.com reported.
García was injured June 10 during a game against the Toronto Blue Jays. He exited in the seventh inning after making a throw home in an attempt to get George Springer at the plate, then immediately favoring his right shoulder and arm area. The Phillies placed him on the 60-day injured list on June 12 with a torn right latissimus dorsi, or lat — an injury near the shoulder and back area — according to team-announcement reporting cited by MLB Trade Rumors.
A 60-day injured list move signals a long-term absence and also opens a spot on the club’s 40-man roster. The Phillies made immediate outfield adjustments on June 12, recalling Gabriel Rincones Jr. from Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Reporting at the time also said newly acquired Derek Hill had arrived and Steward Berroa was placed on the paternity list.
García joined Philadelphia on a one-year, $10 million contract that was finalized Dec. 16, 2025. He arrived after establishing himself as a power-hitting outfielder with a strong throwing arm during his years with the Texas Rangers, where he became a two-time All-Star and earned ALCS MVP honors in 2023.
The injury ends a first season in Philadelphia that had not yet produced much offensively but still carried name recognition because of García’s track record. MLB.com’s June 18 snapshot listed him at a .195 batting average with seven home runs and a .599 OPS.
For the Phillies, the immediate impact is straightforward: García is out for the remainder of the season, and the club already has begun shuffling its outfield depth to cover the loss. The longer-term outlook, based on MLB.com’s reported timetable, is that he should be in position to return when the 2027 season opens.
