Phillies' Adolis García undergoes right lat repair, will miss rest of 2026
The Philadelphia Phillies announced Wednesday that outfielder Adolis García underwent successful right latissimus dorsi repair surgery, ending his 2026 season. The club said García is expected to return to full activity in six to eight months, according to MLB.com’s report on the announcement.
The procedure was performed in Chicago by Dr. Anthony Romeo. The Phillies said García will continue his rehabilitation at the club’s complex in Clearwater, Florida. On the calendar, a six- to eight-month recovery from June 24 would put his return-to-full-activity window roughly between Dec. 24, 2026, and Feb. 24, 2027, effectively pushing his comeback into the 2027 preseason.
García’s injury dates to June 10, when he left Philadelphia’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays in the seventh inning after making a throw to home plate. That proved to be the final play of his season. The Phillies placed him on the 60-day injured list two days later with a torn right lat.
Before the injury, García had appeared in 67 games in his first season with Philadelphia and was batting .195 with seven home runs and a .599 OPS. His loss leaves the Phillies without their regular right fielder for the rest of the season.
Phillies coach Don Mattingly told MLB.com that García’s outlook had improved after the initial disappointment of the injury.
“I think he's in better spirits now,” Mattingly said. “Originally, he was pretty down because he knew he did something and was having to make the decision what he was going to do and it was pretty clear. I think he is going to recover. I think he did the right thing, get it taken care of right now, and give him the best chance to come back as a complete player again.”
García, 33, arrived in Philadelphia on a one-year, $10 million contract signed in December 2025 and is eligible for free agency after the season. He is best known for his years with the Texas Rangers, where he was a two-time All-Star, helped the club win the 2023 World Series and earned ALCS MVP honors that same postseason.
