Bellingham Double Sends England to World Cup Semifinals After Extra-Time Win Over Norway

·

Jude Bellingham scored twice as England came from behind to beat Norway 2-1 after extra time in a World Cup quarterfinal on Saturday, sending England to its first semifinal since 2018.

At Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida, Norway struck first in the 36th minute when Andreas Schjelderup put England behind. Bellingham pulled England level just before halftime from close range, but the buildup to that goal became a talking point. AP reported that a Norway goal kick “appeared to make contact with an aerial camera cable” before the ball dropped to Elliot Anderson, who then set up Bellingham. AP also noted that under the Laws of the Game, if the contact had been noticed, play should have been stopped and restarted with a drop ball.

Norway thought it had regained the lead in the 56th minute when Torbjørn Heggem found the net, only for the goal to be disallowed after video review for a foul by Erling Haaland in the box. England then found the decisive moment early in extra time. Bellingham scored again in the third minute of the extra period to complete the turnaround and give England a place in the last four.

The 2-1 victory in the FIFA World Cup 2026 quarterfinal moved England into the semifinals for the first time since its run to the final four in 2018. England will face the winner of Argentina vs. Switzerland for a spot in the championship match.

For Norway, the defeat ended a landmark tournament. This was the nation’s first appearance in a World Cup quarterfinal, and it pushed England deep before falling in extra time. Haaland, who entered the match with seven goals in the tournament, was held scoreless and later substituted in extra time.

Bellingham’s two-goal performance also carried weight beyond the result. After the match, he had six goals in the tournament, level with Harry Kane, according to AP, underlining how central he has been to England’s run. On a night that also featured a disputed sequence before the equalizer and a Norway goal overturned by video review, it was Bellingham who made the difference and sent England back to the World Cup semifinals.
