China Prepares to Launch Chang'e-7 to Probe Moon's Shadowed South Pole

China is preparing to launch Chang’e-7 in the coming days, a complex mission to the moon’s south pole that will search for water ice and test a small hopping craft designed to enter some of the most difficult terrain on the lunar surface.

The mission is among China’s most ambitious lunar reconnaissance efforts to date. It combines four spacecraft — an orbiter, lander, rover and a small hopping, or “mini-flying,” probe — and is aimed at a region of growing interest for space agencies because permanently shadowed craters near the south pole may hold water ice and other frozen volatile materials.

Public launch trackers and recent reporting have pointed to a late-August launch window, with some suggesting liftoff could come as soon as Sunday local time. But Chinese authorities had not publicly released a precise UTC launch time as of Thursday. The mission is set to launch on a Long March-5 rocket from the Wenchang Space Launch Site on the southern island province of Hainan.

Chinese state media reported July 13 that the Long March-5 Y14 rocket had arrived at Wenchang and would undergo assembly and testing with the spacecraft. Xinhua, citing the China Manned Space Agency, said at the time that “The Long March‑5 Y14 carrier rocket will undergo assembly and testing at the launch site together with the Chang’e‑7 lunar probe, which was transported to the site in April.”

China has said the mission’s main objective is to study the lunar south pole and look for water, ice and volatile elements in lunar soil. In an April 2024 summary carried by Xinhua and posted on a Chinese government website, officials said, “The Chang'e‑7 mission, scheduled for launch around 2026, aims to survey the lunar surface environment, water, ice and volatile elements of lunar soil in the lunar south pole.”

What sets Chang’e-7 apart is its plan to directly investigate permanently shadowed regions, the frigid “cold traps” that never receive sunlight. Mission summaries and technical papers identify the illuminated rim area near Shackleton crater, close to the lunar south pole, as the candidate landing region. From there, the small hopping probe is intended to descend into shadowed areas, analyze volatiles and then return to a sunlit area to communicate and recharge.

If that works as planned, it would mark a notable advance in in-situ study — meaning direct measurements taken on site — of places that are difficult to reach with conventional rovers or landers. Scientists see the south pole as especially important because water ice there could help explain the moon’s history and the movement of volatile compounds through the solar system. In the longer term, such resources could also support future lunar exploration.

Chang’e-7 will also rely on Queqiao-2, a relay satellite China launched toward lunar orbit on March 20, 2024, to support communications for later moon missions. Chinese official briefings have said Chang’e-7 carries multiple science instruments and includes international cooperation payloads.

The mission is part of the fourth phase of China’s lunar exploration program. It follows Chang’e-6, which returned samples from the far side of the moon in 2024, and comes ahead of the planned Chang’e-8 mission, which is expected to test technologies relevant to future surface operations. Together, those missions feed into China’s longer-term plans tied to an International Lunar Research Station.

For now, the immediate significance of Chang’e-7 is more focused: whether China can send a multi-part spacecraft system to one of the moon’s most strategically important regions and directly probe the shadowed craters where lunar ice may be hiding.
