CD PROJEKT Targets 2028 Release Window for The Witcher 4, Won't Show Game at Gamescom 2026

CD PROJEKT RED has publicly set its first official release target for The Witcher 4, saying the game is aiming for 2028 but stopping short of announcing a firm launch date. The update came in an official company news post published Aug. 24, which linked to a video message from Michał Nowakowski, joint CEO of CD PROJEKT RED.

The company also moved to set expectations for Gamescom 2026. The Witcher 4 will not be shown at the event, CD PROJEKT said. Instead, the studio will use Gamescom to spotlight The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Songs of the Past, a newly announced expansion for its 2015 role-playing game.

In the company-posted video, Nowakowski said the sequel is “targeting a 2028 release window,” while making clear the studio is not ready to commit to an exact date. As transcribed by PC Gamer from the video, Nowakowski said: “We’re not ready to share an exact date, I can tell you this: The Witcher 4 is targeting a 2028 release window.” The wording is significant: CD PROJEKT has offered a target window, not a locked release date.

Nowakowski also outlined the scale of the project, saying more than 500 developers are working on the game. “We have more than 500 incredibly talented developers working to create something truly special for you,” he said in the company video, according to PC Gamer’s transcription. He added that the project is “our biggest, boldest, and most ambitious game to date.”

The update amounts to the first formal release-window guidance for one of the industry’s most closely watched role-playing games. CD PROJEKT first publicly revealed The Witcher 4 at The Game Awards in 2024 and said at the time that Ciri would lead the new saga. In June 2025, CD PROJEKT and Epic Games also presented a Witcher 4 Unreal Engine 5 technical demo, but that presentation was framed as a technology showcase rather than the final game itself.

For now, the nearer-term Witcher release on CD PROJEKT’s calendar is not The Witcher 4 but new content for The Witcher 3. In an official press release dated July 21, 2026, the company said The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Songs of the Past will be revealed at Gamescom Opening Night Live and is planned to launch in 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.

That leaves CD PROJEKT’s latest message with two clear takeaways for fans: The Witcher 4 now has an official 2028 target window, and Gamescom 2026 will not be the place for a new look at it. Until the studio is ready to share more, its public focus at Gamescom will be on Songs of the Past.
