Kroenke Sports & Entertainment to Acquire Controlling Stake in Los Angeles Angels from Moreno Family

·

Kroenke Sports & Entertainment said Tuesday it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire a controlling interest in the Los Angeles Angels from the Moreno family, a deal that would transfer one of Major League Baseball’s most prominent franchises to one of Southern California’s biggest sports owners. The transaction is expected to close in the first quarter of 2027, subject to customary closing conditions and approval by Major League Baseball, according to the announcement published by MLB.com. Financial terms were not disclosed.

The move would expand the Southern California footprint of E. Stanley “Stan” Kroenke, the owner and chairman of Kroenke Sports & Entertainment. Kroenke already owns the Los Angeles Rams and is closely tied to the region through KSE’s development of SoFi Stadium and the surrounding Hollywood Park project in Inglewood. Adding the Angels would mark a major shift in the Los Angeles-area sports landscape, bringing an MLB club under the umbrella of an owner already central to the local NFL and stadium business.

For the Angels, the agreement would end the Moreno family’s 23-year run controlling the franchise. Arte Moreno bought the team from The Walt Disney Co. in 2003 for roughly $183.5 million to $184 million, according to contemporaneous reporting, and became the first Latino controlling owner in MLB. Tuesday’s announcement said the Moreno family has stewarded the club for 23 years.

The ownership change also lands at a difficult moment in franchise history. The Angels have not reached the postseason since 2014, a drought that has stretched more than a decade and sharpened fan attention on the team’s direction both on and off the field.

“The Angels are a storied franchise anchored in a great market,” Stan Kroenke said in the announcement. “We look forward to an exciting future with the Angels organization.”

Arte Moreno said, “The Moreno Family has been honored to steward the Angels for 23 years and we believe with KSE’s experience and success they are the best next owner for the franchise. The Angels Organization looks forward to continuing its commitment to the fans, our employees, the players and our business partners.”

The deal does not signal any immediate change to the club’s home ballpark situation. According to recent Los Angeles Times reporting, the Angels’ lease at Angel Stadium runs through 2032, with options to extend through 2038. A California law signed Aug. 28 also gives Anaheim leverage in future naming and stadium discussions, underscoring that any long-term stadium questions remain constrained by existing agreements and law rather than facing an immediate resolution.
