Ukraine Says Russia Launched Large Missile-and-Drone Attack on Kyiv and Odesa Overnight

Ukraine said Russia launched a large combined missile-and-drone attack overnight into Monday, focused mainly on the Odesa and Kyiv regions, with official counts still shifting through the morning. In a preliminary update, Ukraine’s General Staff said air defenses had neutralized at least 175 aerial targets by 08:30. Later Ukrainian figures reported by local media put that total at 186, underscoring that the battlefield assessments were still evolving.

In a Telegram update covering the night of Sept. 7-8, the General Staff said Russia began the attack after 18:00 on Sept. 7 and used several types of weapons in the same strike. Ukrainian authorities said the barrage included anti-ship Oniks missiles, ballistic missiles identified as Iskander-M, KN-23 and S-400 trajectory launches, 32 air-launched Kh-101 cruise missiles, and 166 Shahed-type strike drones and decoy drones. The main directions of the attack were the Odesa and Kyiv regions, according to Ukrainian officials.

As of 08:30, the General Staff said Ukrainian forces had “shot down/suppressed” 175 targets: 2 ballistic missiles, 31 cruise missiles and 142 drones. It said the response involved aviation, anti-aircraft missile troops, electronic warfare units, unmanned-systems units and mobile fire groups. The military also reported recorded hits from missiles and attack drones at 29 locations, plus debris from intercepted targets at 9 locations. At the time of the morning update, the attack was still ongoing, the General Staff said, with about 10 hostile drones still in the air. Ukrainian press reports cited in research said residential buildings in Kyiv were damaged, while casualty information was still being clarified.

Later reports from Ukrainian media carried slightly different official figures. Interfax-Ukraine, citing the Ukrainian Air Force, said 186 aerial targets had been neutralized and that hits were recorded at 28 locations, not 29. Radio Svoboda, summarizing an Air Force update as of 09:30, reported a revised preliminary breakdown that included 31 cruise missiles, 8 Kalibr cruise missiles, 2 Banderol loitering munitions and 145 drones neutralized. Those differences are typical of early wartime reporting, as agencies update counts while impact sites, wreckage and flight paths are still being confirmed.

Large overnight Russian strikes combining cruise missiles, ballistic missiles and Shahed-type drones have been a recurring feature of the war in 2026. One reason the numbers often change is that Ukrainian agencies issue early morning assessments before all debris and strike locations are fully documented, and because “shot down/suppressed” can include targets disrupted by electronic warfare as well as those physically destroyed. Independent verification of the exact interception totals was not immediately available.
