Antonelli Dominates Madring: Wins Spanish Grand Prix for Eighth 2026 Victory

Kimi Antonelli tightened his grip on the Formula 1 title race Sunday, winning the Spanish Grand Prix at Madrid’s new Madring circuit for his eighth victory of the 2026 season and extending his Drivers’ Championship lead to 81 points.

Antonelli, driving for Mercedes, took the checkered flag ahead of Max Verstappen of Red Bull, with McLaren’s Lando Norris finishing third, according to Formula1.com. The result further strengthened Antonelli’s position at the top of the standings, particularly with Mercedes teammate George Russell coming home fifth. The 81-point margin reported after the race is over Russell.

The race turned on strategy after Norris had started from pole. The McLaren driver edged Antonelli by 0.011 seconds in qualifying on Saturday, according to the FIA’s qualifying report, and began Sunday in the best position to control the inaugural Formula 1 race at Madring. But Formula1.com said a Virtual Safety Car period — a neutralized race phase that slows the field without sending out the full safety car — proved decisive. Mercedes used the moment to gain the net lead, while Norris lost out with a slow pit stop that dropped him behind Verstappen as well as Antonelli.

That sequence left Antonelli in front at the circuit’s debut race and allowed the Italian rookie to convert the opportunity into another win in what has become a commanding season. Beating Verstappen and Norris on track also underlined the depth of his advantage in 2026, even as the championship gap cited after Sunday’s race was measured over Russell in second place.

The race also featured several notable retirements. Lewis Hamilton went out early with brake trouble, according to Formula1.com. Carlos Sainz failed to finish his home race in Spain, while Sergio Perez retired with a suspected water-system issue. Lance Stroll also did not reach the finish, with Formula1.com reporting brake troubles for the Aston Martin driver.

For Madrid, the event marked a significant return to the Formula 1 calendar. Sunday’s race was the first world championship grand prix in the Spanish capital since the Jarama era in 1981, and the first ever held at the new Madring circuit. That gave Antonelli’s victory added weight: he not only won another race in a season he has increasingly controlled, but also became the first Formula 1 winner at a brand-new venue that reintroduced Madrid to the championship after decades away.

With eight wins now on the year, Antonelli’s latest result was more than another entry on a dominant season résumé. It was a championship-significant victory at a new and high-profile stop on the calendar, one that leaves Mercedes’ young leader in even firmer control heading deeper into the 2026 campaign.
