49ers Rule Out Nick Bosa for Week 3 vs. Cardinals; Injured Reserve Under Consideration

The San Francisco 49ers have ruled star defensive end Nick Bosa out for Sunday’s Week 3 game against the Arizona Cardinals, and coach Kyle Shanahan said the team expects him to miss “around a few weeks” as it considers whether to place him on injured reserve.

The 49ers’ final injury report, published Friday, listed Bosa as out with knee and calf injuries. According to the team, Bosa did not practice all week and sustained the calf injury during his individual warmup ahead of Thursday’s practice. Shanahan said Friday the 49ers were discussing whether to put Bosa on injured reserve and expected to make roster decisions Saturday. ESPN’s Adam Schefter and NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport also reported that Bosa is expected to miss a few weeks and that injured reserve is under consideration.

Veteran wide receiver Mike Evans was the only 49ers player listed as questionable. Evans is dealing with a hip injury and returned to practice Friday as a limited participant after missing Wednesday and Thursday. The 49ers also ruled out Romello Height with a hand injury, Demarcus Robinson with an ankle injury and James Thompson Jr. with an ankle injury.

Bosa’s absence is a major hit for San Francisco’s defense. He is the team’s top pass rusher and one of the league’s most accomplished edge defenders, highlighted by his AP Defensive Player of the Year award in 2022. His latest setback also comes after the 49ers previously reported that he tore his right ACL in Week 3 of the 2025 season. With the defensive front already dealing with injuries, Shanahan said adjusting without Bosa will not fall on one player alone. “That will be a challenge on everyone else,” he said.

The 49ers are scheduled to host the Cardinals on Sunday, Sept. 27, at 1:05 p.m. PT, or 4:05 p.m. ET, at Levi’s Stadium. Final game-day availability decisions, including Evans’ status, will be announced 90 minutes before kickoff. If the team moves forward with an injured reserve decision for Bosa, it had expected to do so Saturday.
