Bohm's 10th-Inning Homer Sends Phillies Past Braves, Forces Game 3

The Philadelphia Phillies stayed alive Wednesday night, beating the Atlanta Braves 4-3 in 10 innings in Game 2 of the National League Wild Card Series on Alec Bohm’s go-ahead solo home run.

The victory at Truist Park in Atlanta evened the best-of-three series at 1-1 and sent it to a winner-take-all Game 3 on Thursday. Philadelphia had entered the night facing elimination and was down to its final six outs before rallying.

Atlanta led 3-1 after scoring twice in the bottom of the seventh. The rally followed a misplayed fly ball by Phillies right fielder Bryce Harper, and Philadelphia then removed starter Cristopher Sánchez.

The Phillies answered in the eighth. Kyle Schwarber opened the inning with a game-tying home run that MLB projected at 447 feet, and Harper followed immediately with another homer to tie it at 3-3.

Bohm broke the tie in the top of the 10th, driving the decisive solo shot to the opposite field. According to MLB’s Phillies recap, it was Bohm’s first opposite-field home run since Opening Day. The same recap said he became the fourth player in franchise history to hit a go-ahead home run in extra innings of a postseason game.

Philadelphia then turned to rookie right-hander Andrew Painter to finish the job. In the first true relief outing of his career, Painter worked the final three innings and earned the win. He escaped a two-on, two-out jam in the bottom of the 10th to preserve the lead.

The final out was especially notable. With Dominic Smith at the plate, Painter successfully used MLB’s Automated Balls and Strikes challenge system, which has been in use league-wide in 2026, to overturn the last pitch to a strike and record the game-ending strikeout.

Didier Fuentes took the loss for Atlanta.

Philadelphia finished with four runs on 12 hits, while Atlanta had three runs on nine hits. Neither team committed an error.

The result kept the Phillies’ season going and set up a decisive Game 3 with a trip to the National League Division Series on the line. It also produced one of the more unusual endings of the postseason so far, with the ABS challenge system directly determining the final out of an elimination game.
