Mike Ditka, the Pro Football Hall of Famer who later coached the New Orleans Saints, died Friday at 86, according to a family statement reported by The Associated Press. The Saints said in a statement Friday that they were mourning the former head coach, who led the team from 1997 to 1999.

Ditka was one of the NFL’s most recognizable figures, first as one of pro football’s early star tight ends and later as the coach of the Chicago Bears team that won the 1985 NFL title and capped that season with a victory in Super Bowl XX. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1988 as a player.

For New Orleans readers, Ditka’s connection is direct: the Saints identified him Friday as the club’s head coach from 1997 to 1999. His tenure in New Orleans came after his far more prominent run in Chicago, where he coached the Bears from 1982 to 1992 and became a defining NFL personality.

“The New Orleans Saints organization mourns the passing of NFL icon Mike Ditka,” the team said in its Oct. 9 statement. In the family statement reported by the AP, relatives said, “It is with profound sadness…” in announcing his death Friday.

Ditka’s football prominence stretched back decades before his coaching career. Drafted fifth overall in 1961, he became one of the league’s early standout tight ends, helping define a position that would grow into one of the game’s most important offensive roles. His accomplishments also were recognized at the college level: He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1986.

His place in NFL history was secured both on the field and on the sideline. As a player, Ditka rose to Hall of Fame status and became one of the sport’s best-known names. As a coach, he is most closely tied to the Bears’ championship 1985 season, a team that remains among the most famous in league history.

Ditka also became widely known to football fans by nicknames including “Iron Mike” and “Da Coach,” though his national stature rested on his record and visibility across multiple eras of the sport.

No official cause of death had been publicly announced as of the initial reports Friday.
