Rays Clinch AL Pennant with 7-3 Win Over Guardians, End Cleveland’s Comeback

·

The Cleveland Guardians’ unlikely 2026 season ended Monday night when the Tampa Bay Rays beat them 7-3 in Game 6 of the American League Championship Series, clinching the pennant with a 4-2 series win and stopping Cleveland one step short of the World Series.

The result mattered well beyond one game. It closed the door on one of the American League’s most dramatic late-season turnarounds: Cleveland was 60-65 and 5 1/2 games behind the Chicago White Sox on Aug. 17 before rallying to win the AL Central and then advancing through the AL Division Series. For Tampa Bay, the victory at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida, sent the Rays to their first World Series since 2008 and kept alive their pursuit of the first championship in franchise history.

Tampa Bay built control early and never gave it back. In the second inning, Richie Palacios lined a two-run double to put the Rays ahead, and Jonny DeLuca followed with an RBI sacrifice fly for a 3-0 lead.

That was enough support for Rays starter Freddy Peralta, who worked 5 1/3 innings and allowed five hits and one earned run while striking out three. Cleveland did not break through until the sixth inning, and by then Tampa Bay had dictated the game’s pace.

The decisive swing came in the seventh, when Junior Caminero hit a two-run home run off the left-field foul pole to push the Rays further in front. Yandy Díaz added a two-run homer in the eighth, turning a close game into a four-run cushion.

Cleveland finished with three runs on seven hits. Tampa Bay scored seven runs on seven hits, and neither team committed an error.

The Guardians’ offense came late. Cleveland scored in the sixth and again in the eighth, when Patrick Bailey drew a bases-loaded walk and Nathaniel Lowe forced in another run after being hit by a pitch. But the Guardians never fully erased the damage from Tampa Bay’s early inning or the two late home runs that put the game out of reach.

Even in defeat, Cleveland’s run to the ALCS stood as a significant turnaround. The Guardians were below .500 in mid-August and trailing in the division, then surged through the final weeks of the regular season to overtake the White Sox and claim the AL Central. They carried that momentum through the ALDS and into the league championship series, making this a deeper postseason run than their position two months earlier suggested.

For Tampa Bay, the pennant sends the franchise back to the Fall Classic for the first time in 18 years. The Rays will face the Milwaukee Brewers in a World Series matchup guaranteed to produce a first-time champion for one of the two clubs. According to MLB, Game 1 is set for Friday at 8 p.m. EDT in Milwaukee.
