Jannik Sinner Returns to Tennis at Italian Open After Doping Ban

Published:

ROME — World number one Jannik Sinner has returned to competitive tennis at the Italian Open, following a three-month suspension for a doping violation. The 23-year-old Italian's comeback at Rome's Foro Italico marks a significant moment in his career and for Italian tennis.

Sinner's suspension stemmed from positive tests for clostebol, an anabolic steroid, during the Indian Wells tournament in March 2024. The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) accepted that the substance entered his system unintentionally through massages from his physiotherapist, who had used a spray containing clostebol to treat a personal injury. Despite the unintentional exposure, Sinner accepted a three-month ban, acknowledging his responsibility for his team's actions. His suspension began on February 9 and concluded on May 4, 2025.

Reflecting on the suspension, Sinner stated, "This case had been hanging over me now for nearly a year... I have always accepted that I am responsible for my team and realize WADA's strict rules are an important protection for the sport I love."

During his absence, Sinner maintained his top ranking, benefiting from rival Alexander Zverev's early exit at the Monte-Carlo Masters. He resumed training on April 13 and expressed cautious optimism about his return, noting the challenges of readjusting to competitive play.

The Italian Open, running from May 7 to May 18, serves as a crucial lead-up to the French Open. Sinner's participation is particularly significant given the recent surge in Italian tennis, with seven Italian men ranked within the world's top 60, many under the age of 23.

Defending champion Alexander Zverev is also competing, aiming to retain his title. On the women's side, three-time winner Iga Świątek continues to be a formidable force on clay courts.

The tournament has seen notable withdrawals due to injuries, including Paula Badosa's recurring back issue and Petra Kvitova's leg problem. These absences have opened opportunities for other contenders to advance further in the competition.

Fans can watch the Italian Open through various streaming services. In the United States, the Tennis Channel is available via Sling TV or Fubo. United Kingdom viewers can tune in through Sky Sports, with options like Sky Glass and Now Sports. Australian coverage is provided by beIN Sports, offering free trials and monthly passes. For those traveling, using a VPN can help access usual services from abroad.

The weather in Rome during the tournament has been favorable for outdoor play, with temperatures ranging from 13.3°C to 22.2°C.

The ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Rome has a total financial commitment of €9,645,265 for the 2025 edition, including prize money of €8,055,385. The singles champion will earn €985,030, and the doubles team that wins will split €400,560.

Sinner's return is not just a personal milestone but also a symbol of resilience and triumph for Italian tennis. His clean-cut image and sportsmanship have earned him widespread admiration, and his comeback is expected to inspire a new generation of Italian players.

As the Italian Open progresses, all eyes will be on Sinner to see how he performs after his hiatus and whether he can reclaim his dominance on the clay courts.
