Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Eggs Sickens 79 Across Seven States

In early June 2025, a significant Salmonella outbreak linked to eggs distributed by the August Egg Company has sickened at least 79 individuals across seven U.S. states, leading to 21 hospitalizations. In response, the company has recalled approximately 1.7 million brown organic and cage-free eggs distributed between February and May.

The affected states include Arizona, California, Illinois, Indiana, Nebraska, New Mexico, Nevada, Washington, and Wyoming. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have published details of the impacted egg brands and codes on their websites.

Salmonella infection typically manifests with symptoms such as diarrhea, fever, vomiting, dehydration, and stomach cramps. While most individuals recover without treatment, severe cases can pose greater risks to young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems.

Consumers are advised to dispose of or return recalled eggs and to disinfect any surfaces they may have contacted. The CDC emphasizes the importance of proper egg handling and cooking practices to mitigate infection risks.

This incident underscores ongoing challenges in food safety within the egg industry, highlighting the need for stringent regulatory oversight and consumer vigilance to prevent such outbreaks.
