Felix Rosenqvist wins 110th Indianapolis 500 in closest finish ever
Felix Rosenqvist won the 110th Indianapolis 500 on Sunday by 0.0233 seconds over David Malukas, the closest finish in the race’s history and the smallest margin ever recorded at the marquee event of the NTT INDYCAR SERIES.
Rosenqvist, driving the No. 60 SiriusXM Honda for Meyer Shank Racing w/ Curb Agajanian, made the winning move on the final lap after a late sequence of cautions compressed the field for a one-lap restart. Caio Collet hit the SAFER barrier in Turn 2 on Lap 192, triggering a caution and later a red flag, and Mick Schumacher made contact with the barrier on Lap 197 to bring out the final caution. On the restart, Rosenqvist ran the high line exiting Turn 4 and edged ahead of Malukas at the Yard of Bricks.
Malukas, in the No. 12 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet, finished second, with Scott McLaughlin third in the No. 3 Pennzoil Team Penske Chevrolet. Pato O’Ward of Arrow McLaren was fourth, and Marcus Armstrong of Meyer Shank Racing finished fifth. The previous closest Indy 500 finish came in 1992, when Al Unser Jr. beat Scott Goodyear by 0.043 seconds. Sunday’s race also set an Indy 500 record with 70 lead changes, breaking the previous mark of 68 set in 2013. The top five were separated by 0.4360 seconds at the finish, and Rosenqvist’s race average speed was 162.021 mph.
The victory was Rosenqvist’s second career NTT INDYCAR SERIES win and his first since Road America in 2020. It also gave Meyer Shank Racing its second series victory, with both of those wins coming in the Indianapolis 500 after Helio Castroneves’ triumph in 2021. Rosenqvist became the third Swedish driver to win the race, joining Kenny Bräck in 1999 and Marcus Ericsson in 2022.
“Unreal; I still don’t believe it,” Rosenqvist said, according to INDYCAR’s post-race recap.
Malukas, who came within a fraction of a second of giving Team Penske the victory, said his car had the pace to win even if he fell just short at the line. “We were the fastest car that whole race. I gave it 150 percent. I mean, I almost crashed this damn car every lap, and we still ended up with a P2,” he said, according to INDYCAR’s post-race recap.
The race took place Sunday, May 24, 2026, at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Speedway, Indiana, and INDYCAR reported 629 on-track passes, including 567 for position, underscoring how tightly contested the 500-mile race remained through the final lap.
Rosenqvist also arrived at Indianapolis with a recent personal milestone. INDYCAR said he and his wife welcomed their daughter, Stella, on May 4. After the win, he said: “I really miss my wife and my newborn child, Stella.”
