U.S. Clinches World Cup Round of 32 With 2-0 Win over Australia in Seattle

·

The United States secured a place in the World Cup round of 32 on Friday, beating Australia 2-0 in a Group D match in Seattle for its second straight victory of the tournament. The result sent the Americans through to the knockout stage after only two matches, an early advancement made possible by the 2026 men’s World Cup’s expanded 48-team format.

The U.S. took the lead in the 11th minute on an own goal by Australia defender Cameron Burgess. The move began with Folarin Balogun driving down the left side and cutting the ball back toward Ricardo Pepi, whose presence helped force the deflection into the net. The Americans doubled the lead in the 43rd minute when Alex Freeman scored with a header from a set-piece sequence. The goal was initially flagged offside but was awarded after a VAR review.

The victory gave the United States six points from its first two Group D matches and, according to Associated Press reporting, clinched a berth in the knockout phase with one group game still to play. In this year’s expanded tournament, 32 teams advance from the 48-team field into a newly added round of 32, making such early qualification possible and notable.

The performance also highlighted U.S. depth. Christian Pulisic, the team’s top star, did not play because of a calf injury, and Pepi started in his place. Even without Pulisic, the Americans controlled the first half and built a two-goal cushion before halftime. Australia improved after the break but could not overturn the deficit.

Freeman’s goal added another notable moment for the 21-year-old U.S. international, who moved from Orlando City to Villarreal in January 2026. His finish gave the Americans breathing room before intermission and stood after the video review confirmed he was onside.

The match was played at Lumen Field, the Seattle venue also referred to in some tournament materials as Seattle Stadium, giving the co-host Americans another home World Cup night. The United States will close group play against TĂĽrkiye on June 25.
