Sinner Rallies to Beat Zverev, Defends Wimbledon Title for Second Straight Year
Jannik Sinner, the top-seeded world No. 1, beat Alexander Zverev in four sets Sunday to win Wimbledon for the second straight year and claim the fifth Grand Slam singles title of his career.
Sinner defeated No. 2 seed Zverev 6-7 (7), 7-6 (2), 6-3, 6-4 in the men’s singles final at Centre Court at the All England Club in London on July 12, 2026. The victory made the 24-year-old Italian a back-to-back champion at the grass-court major after also winning Wimbledon in 2025.
Zverev took the opening set in a tiebreak, but Sinner regained control by winning the second-set tiebreak and then closing out the match with victories in the third and fourth sets. The result added another Wimbledon title to a rapidly growing major résumé for Sinner, who has now won Grand Slam singles trophies at the Australian Open, U.S. Open and Wimbledon.
The matchup carried added weight because Zverev arrived in London as the reigning French Open champion. The German won Roland-Garros on June 7 for his first major title and was trying to follow that breakthrough with a Wimbledon championship five weeks later. Instead, his first appearance in a Wimbledon final ended against the player who entered as the tournament favorite.
Before this year, Zverev had never advanced beyond the fourth round at Wimbledon, making Sunday’s final his deepest run at the tournament by far. During the match, The Associated Press reported that Zverev appeared to be bothered by a knee issue after slipping on the grass during a key point in the third set.
For Sinner, the win further strengthened his position at the top of the men’s game. He successfully defended the Wimbledon title and moved to five career major singles championships, following his Australian Open titles in 2024 and 2025, his U.S. Open title in 2024, and his Wimbledon win in 2025. He also entered the final having won his previous nine meetings with Zverev.
