Jordan Walker wins 2026 Home Run Derby, becomes first-ever Cardinals champion

Jordan Walker made Home Run Derby history Monday night, winning the 2026 T-Mobile Home Run Derby in his first appearance and becoming the first St. Louis Cardinals player ever to claim the title.

Walker, the 24-year-old Cardinals outfielder, beat Philadelphia Phillies slugger Kyle Schwarber 12-11 in the final at Citizens Bank Park, according to MLB’s Cardinals recap. In the first year of Major League Baseball’s revised swing-based format, Walker stayed alive with a late rally under the extension rule and edged the hometown favorite in front of the Philadelphia crowd.

The victory marked a first for a franchise that had never produced a Derby champion. The previous best finish by a Cardinals player came in 2003, when Albert Pujols was the runner-up. Walker got there by hitting 13 home runs in the opening round and six more in the semifinals, giving him 19 before the final. His longest drive of the night traveled 470 feet, and MLB’s Cardinals coverage noted that his first swing produced a 461-foot homer.

Walker’s Derby win fit neatly into one of baseball’s strongest first-half turnarounds. He entered the All-Star break with 22 home runs, a .294 batting average, 74 RBIs and an .886 OPS. That production followed two difficult seasons: after a promising 2023 debut, Walker hit a combined 11 home runs across 2024 and 2025 before reworking his approach.

MLB’s Cardinals coverage said a simplified swing helped drive Walker’s breakout in 2026. Walker, who was born May 22, 2002, was drafted 21st overall in 2020 and made his major league debut on March 30, 2023. Now he heads into the second half not only as an All-Star, but as the winner of one of the sport’s showcase events.

“I felt better than I ever have, in all honesty,” Walker said. “I’m like, ‘What is this? What’s the blueprint for this? ... Instead of doing all these different swing dives and everything like that, I think we’ve just got to keep it simple, keep it athletic.’ And then it really kind of took off from there.”

On a night that added a new line to Cardinals history, Walker also offered a quick explanation for the power display.

“Philly flies a little better than St. Louis,” Walker said.
