Kyle Teel to miss 6–12 weeks with left high-ankle sprain; White Sox recall Edgar Quero

Chicago White Sox catcher Kyle Teel is expected to miss six to 12 weeks with a left high-ankle sprain, creating an immediate roster problem at a position where the club was already struggling. Manager Will Venable shared the timetable, as reported by MLB.com, after the White Sox placed Teel on the 10-day injured list Tuesday.

Teel was hurt Monday, July 20, in the second inning against the Texas Rangers at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas. The injury happened as he tried to tag Ezequiel Durán at the plate on a twisting, noncontact-type play. Teel was helped off the field by Venable and head athletic trainer James Kruk, then left on crutches. He was later seen in a walking boot.

According to MLB.com, Teel underwent an MRI on Tuesday morning. Venable said the projected recovery window is broad, but left open the possibility that the young catcher could return on the shorter end if rehab goes well. “With a range that big and Kyle being a young, strong man, he can go about his treatment and rehab and hopefully make it as quick as possible,” Venable said.

Chicago’s corresponding move was to recall catcher Edgar Quero from Triple-A Charlotte, giving the White Sox an immediate replacement behind the plate. The timing matters because catcher had already been one of the club’s weakest offensive spots.

Entering the day, White Sox catchers ranked last in the majors in OPS at .512, according to MLB research cited by MLB.com. They also were last in batting average at .166 and on-base percentage at .243. Losing Teel, one of the key young players in Chicago’s rebuild, further thins a group that had not produced much offense even before the injury.

The timeline is significant, too. A six-week recovery from the July 20 injury would put a possible return around late August or early September. The longer end of the estimate would likely keep Teel out until October.

The setback comes in an already injury-disrupted season for Teel, who had only returned to the White Sox on June 22 after an earlier stint on the 60-day injured list. Chicago acquired Teel from the Boston Red Sox in the December 2024 trade that sent left-hander Garrett Crochet to Boston, and he remains an important piece of the organization’s long-term plans.

Teel acknowledged the frustration after the latest interruption. “Yeah, it’s very frustrating,” he said, according to MLB.com. “It’s not how I anticipated this year to go. I put a lot of work in this offseason. I just wanted it really bad. ... It’s very unfortunate, but I’m not going to sit around and feel bad for myself. I’m just going to keep pushing every day and do everything I can to help this team win when I’m back.”
