White House Announces Expansion of Genesis Mission, Citing More Than $5 Billion in Federal Commitments

The White House said Wednesday that the Trump administration is expanding the Genesis Mission, a national artificial intelligence-for-science initiative, with more than $5 billion in federal commitments.

The announcement came in a White House release published July 22, which said Michael Kratsios, the president’s science adviser and director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, unveiled the expanded effort at the Genesis Mission 2026 Summit. The administration said the initiative now brings together more than 15 federal agencies around research awards, datasets, facilities and funding opportunities.

Genesis is a DOE-led national mission created by executive order in November 2025 to connect federal labs, computing resources and scientific datasets for AI-driven research. The administration has framed it as a whole-of-government effort built on the American Science and Security Platform, a Department of Energy-developed system that it says links data, computing power and AI tools across the federal science enterprise.

The White House said the expansion includes new National Science and Technology Challenges in areas including health care, energy, infrastructure, manufacturing and affordability. Examples listed in the release include “Finding the Root Causes of Chronic Disease,” “Unlocking Cures for Pediatric Cancer,” “Scaling the Grid,” “Recentering Microelectronics,” “Realizing Quantum Systems,” and “Predicting Living Systems.”

“America’s greatest scientific achievements have been born of national mobilizations paired with the construction of new institutions,” Kratsios said in the White House release. “The Genesis Mission is the next chapter in that tradition, as we work together to harness AI for scientific discovery at a scale no one else on the planet can match.”

But the White House announcement left key details unspecified. The release did not include a public agency-by-agency line-item breakdown showing how the more than $5 billion total was calculated. It also said that “the 278 projects selected today represent the very best of our nation’s scientific enterprise,” but, in the publicly available materials described by the administration, there was no separately published roster that independently confirms those 278 selected projects.

That distinction matters because federal “commitments” do not necessarily mean newly appropriated money. In federal announcements, the term can include previously awarded funds, planned funding opportunities, use of facilities, data access and partnerships, while Congress still controls new appropriations.

Some elements of the mission had already been documented before Wednesday’s White House rollout. President Donald Trump formally launched the Genesis Mission by executive order on Nov. 24, 2025, with the Department of Energy designated to lead it. DOE then announced 26 initial science and technology challenges on Feb. 12, 2026, followed by $293 million in Genesis-related funding on March 17.

More recently, DOE and Japan announced a $1 billion strategic partnership over five years on June 4, with $500 million from each country, subject to appropriations. That partnership offered one of the clearest publicly detailed funding figures tied to the initiative before the White House’s broader $5 billion-plus claim.

The new White House push also follows a policy blueprint released a day earlier by OSTP, “Science: A New Golden Age,” which called for the Genesis Mission to be fully funded and scaled across the government. That July 21 report directed agencies to submit implementation plans and budget guidance, signaling that the administration wants Genesis to become a central vehicle for federal AI-driven research.

Wednesday’s announcement therefore marks both an expansion and an accountability test. The administration has put a large number — more than $5 billion — behind its AI-for-science agenda, and it says 278 projects were selected under the effort. What is public so far shows a growing DOE-led initiative with documented milestones and partnerships, but not yet a full public accounting of how the White House total is assembled across agencies.
