Schwarber’s Two-Run Walk-Off Caps Phillies’ Six-Run Ninth, Extends Win Streak to Nine

·

Kyle Schwarber capped a stunning six-run ninth inning with a two-run walk-off home run Sunday as the Philadelphia Phillies rallied past the St. Louis Cardinals 6-4 at Citizens Bank Park, extending their winning streak to nine games.

Philadelphia entered the bottom of the ninth trailing 4-0 and looked headed for a quiet loss before its lineup surged. Edmundo Sosa delivered the first major blow with a three-run double that cut the deficit to 4-3. Bryan De La Cruz then drove in the tying run, setting the stage for Schwarber, who ended it with a two-run shot off Cardinals reliever Riley O’Brien.

The homer carried added significance beyond the comeback. It was the Phillies’ first walk-off home run since June 9, 2023, according to MLB’s game recap, and that previous walk-off homer also came from Schwarber. Philadelphia had not hit a walk-off homer at any point between that 2023 swing and Sunday’s finish.

Alex McFarlane was credited with the win for Philadelphia, while O’Brien took the loss for St. Louis. The victory improved the Phillies to 73-58. Schwarber entered the day leading the majors in home runs with 38, and the game-winner added to that total.

For a Phillies team pushing through the stretch run, the immediate takeaway was the result as much as the fashion in which it arrived. Philadelphia turned a four-run deficit into a six-run outburst in its final at-bat, kept its winning streak alive and added another jolt of momentum with one of its most dramatic victories of the season.
