NVIDIA to Provide Up to $105 Billion in Credit Guarantees for OpenAI Data-Center Campus in Ohio

NVIDIA said Aug. 17 that it will provide up to $105 billion in credit support for a massive artificial intelligence data-center campus in southern Ohio that SB Energy will build and OpenAI will lease, a project the companies say will support 35,000 construction jobs through 2032 and create about 2,500 permanent jobs.

The key financial detail is that NVIDIA is not handing over $105 billion in cash financing. In its press release and regulatory disclosure, the chipmaker said it is providing credit support in the form of residual-value guaranties tied to the project, with the aggregate payment obligation for the initial commitment capped at $105 billion.

The project is the PORTS-Pike Technology Campus in Pike County, near Piketon, Ohio. SB Energy, an affiliate of SoftBank Group, will build, own and operate the campus. OpenAI has agreed to a 20-year lease for capacity at the site, and the companies said the campus is expected to come online in phases beginning in 2028.

NVIDIA said its credit support is meant to secure an initial 4.25 gigawatts of information-technology capacity, with an option to secure about 3.75 gigawatts more. As part of the arrangement, NVIDIA also said it will make a $1.5 billion equity investment in SB Energy.

The companies described the project as part of a larger build-out around power and grid infrastructure. NVIDIA and SB Energy said the broader development includes plans to build at least 10 gigawatts of new energy generation and invest at least $4.2 billion in regional grid infrastructure in coordination with AEP Ohio, the electric utility serving the area.

The site itself carries a long industrial history. The campus is planned as a redevelopment of the decommissioned Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant, a former uranium-enrichment site. In March 2026, the project was publicly presented by the Department of Energy, the Commerce Department and SoftBank and SB Energy as a large-scale technology and power-development effort.

What makes the latest announcement stand out is both the scale and the structure: NVIDIA is backing the project through a very large contingent guarantee while helping anchor long-term demand for AI computing capacity that OpenAI has agreed to lease.

“AI is becoming infrastructure — the foundation for intelligence in every industry — and land, power and shell have become vital in the age of AI,” NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang said in the company’s Aug. 17 press release. “Now is the time to scale the AI infrastructure that will power the next industrial revolution.”

The job projections cited by the companies are also unusually large for a single data-center development. According to company statements, the campus is expected to support 35,000 construction jobs through 2032, with about 2,500 permanent operating jobs once the site is running. NVIDIA said its separate $1.5 billion equity investment in SB Energy is part of the broader arrangement behind the Ohio build-out.
