Ukraine reports air defenses shot down or suppressed 233 Russian aerial targets in overnight Aug. 26–27 attack

Ukraine’s military said Wednesday that its air defenses had shot down or suppressed 233 Russian aerial targets in a large overnight attack, even as direct hits and falling debris were recorded across multiple regions, underscoring both the scale of the assault and the fact that some weapons got through.

In a Telegram update posted Aug. 27, Ukraine’s General Staff said Russia attacked overnight “from 18:00 on Aug. 26” and that, by 9 a.m. local time, Ukrainian forces had “ЗБИТО/ПОДАВЛЕНО 233 ЦІЛІ ПРОТИВНИКА” — “shot down or suppressed 233 enemy aerial targets.” The military said there were direct hits at 15 locations and debris from intercepted targets at 11 locations.

According to the General Staff, the attack included two Oniks anti-ship missiles launched from occupied Crimea, ballistic missiles identified as Iskander-M/KN-23 launched from Russia’s Bryansk and Kursk regions, and 258 strike UAVs, including Shahed-type drones and other drones or decoys, launched from several directions in Russia and occupied Ukrainian territory. It said the main directions of the attack were Odesa region, Kyiv region, Dnipropetrovsk region, Poltava region and Zaporizhzhia.

The military’s preliminary breakdown said Ukrainian forces shot down or suppressed one Oniks missile, seven ballistic missiles, three S8000 “Banderol” munitions and 222 UAVs. The General Staff said the figures were preliminary, that some enemy weapons did not reach their targets, and that the attack was still ongoing at the time of the update, with several drones still in Ukrainian airspace.

Reports from the ground showed the attack’s impact extended beyond the military tally. Reuters reported that explosions were heard in Kyiv early Wednesday. Ukrainian media, citing Kyiv city authorities, said debris fell in the capital’s Podilskyi and Shevchenkivskyi districts, including on the grounds of a school and in a residential courtyard.

Reuters also reported, citing local officials, that two people were injured in Kryvyi Rih after missiles hit an industrial facility and that three more people were wounded in Zaporizhzhia.

In southern Ukraine, Odesa regional officials, cited by Ukrainian media, said the region was under attack for more than seven hours. The reported damage included a multi-story residential building and at least two educational institutions.

The strikes fit a broader pattern of large combined Russian attacks in recent months that mix drones with cruise or ballistic missiles in an apparent effort to strain Ukraine’s layered air defenses. Shahed-type drones have become a mainstay of Russia’s long-range strikes on Ukraine, while ballistic missiles such as Iskander are harder to intercept and are often used alongside drone swarms.
