NFL to Double International Regular-Season Games in 2025, Expands to Europe and Middle East

Published:

In a significant move to broaden its global reach, the National Football League (NFL) has announced plans to double the number of international regular-season games from four to eight starting in 2025. This expansion will introduce NFL games to new cities across Europe and the Middle East, marking a pivotal step in the league's international growth strategy.

The NFL's decision to increase its international presence reflects a strategic effort to engage with a broader global audience and tap into emerging markets. Confirmed games for the 2025 season include matchups in Berlin, Dublin, and Madrid, with additional plans to host a game in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Berlin, Germany: The NFL will host its first-ever regular-season game at Berlin's Olympic Stadium, marking the fifth such game in Germany. This follows successful games in Munich and Frankfurt, underscoring the league's commitment to the German market.

Dublin, Ireland: The Pittsburgh Steelers are set to play at Croke Park in Dublin, marking the first regular-season NFL game in Ireland. The Steelers have historical ties to Ireland, with the Rooney family, the team's owners, having deep Irish roots. The date and opponent for this game will be announced later this spring.

Madrid, Spain: The Miami Dolphins will host a game at Real Madrid's Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, marking the NFL's debut in Spain. This initiative is part of the league's broader efforts to engage with Spanish fans and expand its footprint in Europe.

United Arab Emirates: The NFL is exploring the possibility of hosting a regular-season game in the UAE, with Dubai and Abu Dhabi being considered as potential locations. Peter O'Reilly, the league's executive vice president, confirmed this during a news conference at the NFL owners meeting in Palm Beach, Florida. While no specific timing has been determined, the NFL is actively assessing the market's viability for hosting a game.

These developments are part of the NFL's Global Markets Program, which allows franchises to secure international marketing rights to build brand awareness and fan engagement beyond the United States. In 2024, 25 clubs participated in the program across 19 international markets. Notably, the Kansas City Chiefs have been granted marketing rights in Spain, indicating a strong interest in hosting a game in Madrid.

The NFL's international expansion is not without precedent. Since 2007, the league has successfully hosted games in London, establishing a strong international presence. The expansion into new cities signifies the league's commitment to global growth and its ambition to become a truly international sport.

Hosting NFL games in international cities can have significant economic and cultural impacts. These events can boost local economies through tourism and global exposure, foster cultural exchange, and strengthen international relations. For instance, the inaugural NFL game in São Paulo, Brazil, in 2024 generated $61 million in economic impact, highlighting the potential benefits for host cities.

The NFL's 2025 international expansion marks a significant milestone in the league's history, reflecting its ambition to become a truly global sport. By bringing the game to new cities and cultures, the NFL is not only expanding its reach but also enriching the global sports landscape.
