"The Philadelphians" Exhibit Celebrates Immigrant Contributions at Philadelphia's LOVE Park
On May 7, 2025, "The Philadelphians," an immersive art exhibit celebrating the contributions of immigrant communities to Philadelphia, opened at LOVE Park's Welcome Center. The exhibit, running through June 8, features a 360-degree projection showcasing images of both historical and contemporary immigrant populations in the city. Organized by the Forman Arts Initiative (FAI) and Mural Arts Philadelphia, the exhibit also includes workshops, panel discussions, and other programs aimed at engaging the public in immigrant narratives.
"Immigrant stories and family history are a part of all our narratives," the artists stated. The exhibit comes at a time when sanctuary cities like Philadelphia face increasing pressure from the federal government for non-compliance with certain immigration policies.
FAI, founded by Michael Forman and Jennifer Rice, is dedicated to supporting community-based arts and creativity in Philadelphia through programming, convening, and advocacy. Since 2021, FAI has partnered with the Philadelphia Foundation to distribute $3 million in unrestricted funding over five years to community artists and organizations in the Greater Philadelphia Area through the Art Works grant program.
Mural Arts Philadelphia, established in 1984, is the nation's largest public art program, having produced over 4,000 murals throughout the city. The organization collaborates with artists and communities to create public art that transforms public spaces and individual lives.
The exhibit features the work of Philadelphia-based artist duo Nadia Hironaka and Matthew Suib, who have been collaborating since 2008. Their work often celebrates unheard stories and alternative perspectives on history and culture. In partnership with the City of Philadelphia's Office of Immigrant Affairs (OIA), Hironaka & Suib developed this public art project to foster a deeper understanding of immigrant challenges, triumphs, and diverse community narratives within the city.
Philadelphia has a rich history of immigration and cultural diversity, with approximately 16% of its population born outside the United States, ranking it fifth among U.S. cities in terms of foreign-born residents. The exhibit comes at a time when sanctuary cities like Philadelphia face increasing pressure from the federal government for non-compliance with certain immigration policies. By highlighting immigrant narratives, "The Philadelphians" aims to foster empathy, understanding, and dialogue among residents, emphasizing the integral role of immigrants in shaping the city's identity.
Philadelphia has a longstanding tradition of using public art to address social issues and celebrate community identities. Mural Arts Philadelphia has been at the forefront of this movement, creating murals that reflect the city's diverse communities and histories. "The Philadelphians" continues this tradition by focusing on the experiences of immigrant communities, both past and present.
"Philadelphia is incredibly fortunate to have philanthropists like Jennifer Rice and Michael Forman who continue to support and enrich our cityโs arts and culture programs and institutions," said Mayor Cherelle L. Parker.
By delving into these themes, "The Philadelphians" exhibit provides visitors with a deeper understanding of the significance of immigrant contributions to Philadelphia and its broader implications for the city and its residents.
