The 12th World Games Opens in Chengdu: A Celebration of Unity and Athleticism
CHENGDU, China — The 12th edition of The World Games commenced on August 7, 2025, in Chengdu, marking the first time the event is hosted on the Chinese mainland. Under the theme "Boundless Sports, Countless Wonders," the opening ceremony at the Tianfu International Convention Center showcased a blend of China's rich cultural heritage and modern advancements, setting the stage for a historic gathering of athletes from around the globe.
The ceremony unfolded beneath the "Tianfu Roof," Asia's largest timber structure, spanning 430 meters. Approximately 10,000 spectators gathered to witness the event, which emphasized unity and inclusivity. Hu Xiao, the general director of the opening ceremony, remarked, "The roof reminds us of home—protecting us from rain and storms. We want to tell our guests worldwide that we are one family under a roof."
A highlight of the evening was the first-ever cauldron-lighting ceremony on Qinhuang Lake. Two water skiers, Xu Lu and Alu Xiaobo, ignited the cauldron while gliding across the water, symbolizing harmony between fire and water. Hu Jie, the ceremony's chief director, noted, "If fire and water can coexist in harmony, then all conflicts in the world can be reconciled."
The event also featured a dynamic performance by hundreds of dancers wearing color-changing gloves and shoes, creating a mosaic of colors that reflected the Games' motto. The night sky was illuminated with fireworks forming the letter "W," representing the World Games, and a "Tree of Friendship," symbolizing global unity and peace.
China has sent its largest-ever delegation to the Games, comprising 489 members, including 321 athletes competing in 152 events across 28 sports. Notably, para-athletes are included in the delegation for the first time, highlighting a commitment to inclusivity. Gao Zhidan, president of both the Chengdu World Games Organizing Committee and the Chinese Olympic Committee, stated, "We hope that hosting The World Games will effectively drive nationwide fitness initiatives, invigorate the sports industry, boost urban development and enable the benefits of sports development to reach a broader range of people."
The Games feature 34 sports, 60 disciplines, and 256 events, with participation from 116 countries and regions. Organizers have utilized existing venues from the 2023 FISU World University Games, upgrading 18 facilities and setting up nine temporary ones, totaling 27 competition sites. This approach reflects a commitment to sustainability and efficient resource use.
International Olympic Committee President Kirsty Coventry praised the hosts for their "professionalism and hospitality as usual, seamless organization and legendary Chinese efficiency." She encouraged athletes to "give it your best, enjoy the moment and make these memorable and a successful Games—for you, for the fans and for the organizers."
The opening ceremony concluded with a performance of the theme song "Countless Wonders" by an international children's choir, capturing the spirit of global unity and celebration that defines the Games.
As the competitions unfold from August 7 to 17, Chengdu stands as a testament to the harmonious blend of tradition and modernity, welcoming the world to celebrate athleticism and cultural exchange.
