YouTube to Launch AI-Driven Age Verification System in U.S.

YouTube, a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc., is set to implement an artificial intelligence (AI)-driven age verification system in the United States starting August 13, 2025. This initiative aims to enhance protections for underage users by analyzing user activity to estimate ages, regardless of self-reported birthdates.

The new system employs machine learning algorithms to assess various signals, including viewing history, search patterns, and account longevity, to infer a user's age. For users identified as under 18, YouTube will automatically implement several safeguards:

James Beser, Director of Product Management at YouTube Youth, stated, "This technology will allow us to infer a user’s age and then use that signal, regardless of the birthday in the account, to deliver our age-appropriate product experiences and protections."
