Bethpage Black Set to Host 45th Ryder Cup in 2025

The 45th Ryder Cup is set to unfold from September 26 to 28, 2025, at the renowned Bethpage Black Course in Farmingdale, New York. This biennial men's golf competition pits teams from the United States and Europe against each other in a series of match-play formats, continuing a tradition that began in 1927.

Bethpage Black, a public course designed by Joseph H. Burbeck with consultation from A.W. Tillinghast, opened in 1936. It has previously hosted major tournaments, including the U.S. Open in 2002 and 2009, and the PGA Championship in 2019. Known for its challenging layout featuring narrow fairways and deep rough, the course is often heralded as one of the most demanding in the United States. A sign at the first tee warns players: "The Black Course Is An Extremely Difficult Course Which We Recommend Only For Highly Skilled Golfers."

The Ryder Cup format includes 28 matches over three days:

  • Friday, September 26: Morning foursomes (alternate shot) and afternoon four-ball matches.
  • Saturday, September 27: Morning foursomes and afternoon four-ball matches.
  • Sunday, September 28: Twelve singles matches.

Each match is worth one point, with a total of 28 points available. The first team to reach 14.5 points secures the Ryder Cup. In the event of a 14-14 tie, the defending champion retains the trophy.

The European team, under Luke Donald's leadership, has incorporated innovative training techniques, including the use of virtual reality headsets, to acclimate players to the anticipated intense atmosphere at Bethpage Black.

This event marks the second time New York has hosted the Ryder Cup, the first being in 1995 at Oak Hill Country Club. The United States leads the all-time series 27-15-2.

The Ryder Cup is expected to draw significant attention, with the PGA of America distributing 3,000 tickets to local fans as part of a community engagement initiative. The event is anticipated to boost the local economy, attracting visitors and generating revenue for local businesses.

As the competition approaches, both teams are finalizing their preparations, aiming to etch their names into the storied history of the Ryder Cup.
