Expo 2025 Osaka: A Showcase of Global Innovations and Cultural Exchange
Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan, held from April 13 to October 13, 2025, on Yumeshima Island, attracted over 25 million visitors, showcasing global innovations and fostering international collaboration under the theme "Designing Future Society for Our Lives."
The Expo's overarching theme, "Designing Future Society for Our Lives," was complemented by sub-themes: "Saving Lives," "Empowering Lives," and "Connecting Lives." These themes aimed to address global challenges and promote sustainable development.
A central architectural highlight was the Grand Ring, a 2-kilometer wooden structure designed by architect Sou Fujimoto. This landmark symbolized unity and diversity, serving as a focal point for the Expo's activities.
The Expo featured participation from over 160 countries and international organizations, each presenting technological innovations and cultural exhibits. Notably, Louis Vuitton launched two major exhibitions in Osaka, celebrating its 170th anniversary and honoring its long-standing relationship with Japan. The main event, "Visionary Journeys," held at the Nakanoshima Museum of Art, explored the brand’s extensive history and its roots in travel. The second exhibition, "Yayoi Kusama – Infinity," featured Kusama’s iconic ‘Infinity’ rooms and dot motifs.
The Expo faced challenges, including the temporary suspension of water shows due to high levels of Legionella bacteria detected in the water features. The Water Plaza show was halted on June 4 after tests revealed bacteria levels up to 20 times the legal limit. Additionally, the Forest of Tranquility, a foot-soaking area spanning 2.3 hectares, was closed for cleaning. No health incidents were reported, and measures were implemented to address the issue.
Expo 2025 served as a platform for international collaboration, showcasing technological innovations and cultural exhibits from over 160 countries. The event contributed to discussions on building a sustainable and inclusive future society. It also symbolized Osaka's resurgence as a major cultural and economic hub, highlighting the city's revitalization through tourism, infrastructure development, and strategic policies.
The Expo introduced Myaku-Myaku, a mascot symbolizing the event's themes and spirit. Designed by illustrator Kouhei Yamashita, Myaku-Myaku is described as a "mysterious creature" with a body composed of cells (red) and water (blue). The name "Myaku-Myaku" is an onomatopoeia meaning "steadily pulsing," reflecting the continuous flow of life and connections.
Expo 2025 not only showcased technological and cultural advancements but also highlighted the importance of international collaboration in addressing global challenges.
