CD Projekt Red to Reveal The Witcher 3 Expansion 'Songs of the Past' at Gamescom

·

CD Projekt Red has set Gamescom next month for the first proper public reveal of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Songs of the Past, marking the first major expansion for the game since Blood and Wine launched in 2016. The studio has confirmed the expansion will appear during Gamescom Opening Night Live on Aug. 25, putting one of its biggest announcements of 2026 on the opening stage of Europe’s largest gaming event.

Players watching from home can expect at least a first look during Opening Night Live, while people attending Gamescom in Cologne, Germany, will be able to see more at CD Projekt Red’s booth. Coverage citing the company says attendees will get a guided presentation of the expansion in the studio’s entertainment area. Opening Night Live is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 25, with the Gamescom show floor running Aug. 26-30.

CD Projekt Red announced Songs of the Past on May 27, calling it “a third expansion coming to The Witcher 3” and saying, “It will launch in 2027 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.” The company has also said there will be no PlayStation 4 or Xbox One version. CD Projekt Red is co-developing the project with Polish studio Fool’s Theory, and in Q1 2026 earnings materials released May 28, management confirmed that the game would be shown at Gamescom and that more details would come in late summer 2026.

That timing matters because CD Projekt Red is positioning this as a substantial return to one of its best-known games, not a small add-on. In the same May 28 earnings Q&A, management said the project had originally been considered for release in 2026 before being moved. “Our early plans assumed that Songs of the Past could be released this year; however, we decided that it would be launching in 2027,” the company said. Executives also drew a clear line between small downloadable content and this release: “So, first of all, it’s not a DLC — it’s an expansion; we differentiate between the two; DLCs are smaller ones which we typically get for free; expansions are bigger and juicier. It may be semantics for some people, but it’s pretty important for us.” CD Projekt Red has characterized its scale as closer to Blood and Wine.

That is a notable claim for a game that first launched on May 19, 2015. Its previous expansions were Hearts of Stone in October 2015 and Blood and Wine in May 2016, making Songs of the Past the first major expansion for The Witcher 3 in about a decade. The game has sold 65 million copies as of CD Projekt’s Q1 2026 reporting, underscoring why a new expansion still carries weight. What CD Projekt Red has not announced yet is an exact release date within 2027 or a price.
