Google said Tuesday that its Gemini app has surpassed 1 billion monthly users, a scale milestone for consumer artificial intelligence that the company says marks the latest step in the assistant’s rapid growth this year.

The figure came from a Google blog post published Aug. 11 and was not independently verified. In that same post, Google said Gemini is “the fastest-growing product in Google’s history,” a characterization the company provided as it highlighted the app’s expansion.

The milestone is notable because it places Gemini among the largest consumer AI products and underscores how quickly Google has added users in 2026. Google has made Gemini a centerpiece of its AI push, weaving the assistant into products used by billions of people and promoting it heavily across its consumer ecosystem.

Google’s earlier public updates show the pace of that growth. At Google I/O on May 19, Alphabet and Google CEO Sundar Pichai said, “Today, we’ve surpassed 900 million, more than doubling in a year,” referring to Gemini’s monthly active users. He said that figure was up from 400 million at the prior year’s I/O. Then, in Alphabet’s second-quarter 2026 earnings remarks on July 22, Pichai said, “The Gemini app, which now has 950 million monthly active users, with daily active users tripling in the last year.” Google’s new Aug. 11 figure puts the app above 1 billion monthly users less than three weeks later.

Google’s blog post also offered a fresh snapshot of how people are using the app. The company said 63% of users now “talk directly to Gemini,” pointing to growing use of voice interactions. It also said Gemini generates more than 150 million images a day and that the app has more than 100 million active users on Apple’s iOS. Google added that Gemini can automate actions across more than 40 popular apps.

Gemini is Google’s consumer AI assistant. The company rebranded Bard as Gemini and launched the mobile app on Feb. 8, 2024. Since then, Google has integrated Gemini across Search, Android, YouTube and Workspace, making the assistant central to its broader AI strategy. That broader footprint helps explain why the app’s user total matters beyond a single standalone product.

For market context, Reuters reported in mid-2026, citing app analytics firm Sensor Tower, that OpenAI’s ChatGPT app reached about 1 billion monthly active app users in May and June 2026. That provides a comparison point for the consumer AI market, but it does not independently confirm Google’s Gemini figure. As of Aug. 11, the 1 billion monthly users number for Gemini came from Google’s own announcement.
