Barcelona complete signing of Spain captain Rodri from Manchester City

FC Barcelona have completed the signing of Spain captain Rodri from Manchester City and presented him as a Barcelona player on Tuesday, in one of the biggest transfers of the summer just weeks after he led Spain to the 2026 World Cup title. Spanish outlets El País and AS reported the announcement and said the midfielder has signed a contract through June 30, 2030.

Rodri, whose full name is Rodrigo Hernández Cascante, arrived in Barcelona on Monday ahead of the presentation, according to El País and AS. The Spanish outlets differed slightly on the fee structure: El País reported Barcelona will pay 60 million euros ($69.5 million) plus 11 million euros in add-ons, while AS put the deal at about 70 million euros. Neither figure was presented as club-confirmed.

The move carries unusual weight even in a busy transfer window. Rodri arrives not only as an elite club midfielder, but as the captain of the newly crowned world champions. FIFA said he won the Golden Ball as the best player at the 2026 World Cup after Spain lifted the trophy in July.

He leaves Manchester City after a highly successful spell that began in 2019, when he joined the Premier League club and became a central figure in its midfield. Barcelona also marked the signing on social media, while City posted a brief farewell message, according to El País and AS.

The main immediate question is his fitness. Rodri underwent minor back surgery in late July, and reports at the time said the procedure was successful but could affect his availability at the start of the club season.

That caveat does little to diminish the significance of the deal. Barcelona have landed the captain of the current World Cup holders and the standout player from the tournament, prying him from another European heavyweight at a time when he is at the peak of his profile.

At his presentation, Rodri described the move in ambitious terms. “Jugar en el Barça es un sueño. Vamos a por la Champions y a por todo lo que se ponga por delante,” he said, according to El País.

For Barcelona, the transfer is both a headline signing and a statement one: the club has added one of the game’s most decorated current midfielders on a deal that runs to 2030, even if his first appearance may depend on how quickly he recovers from surgery.
