NASA awards Blue Origin up to $700 million contract to build Mars telecommunications network

NASA has awarded Blue Origin a contract worth up to about $700 million to build what is intended to become the next backbone of communications at Mars, a major infrastructure step as the agency looks beyond today’s aging relay fleet.

In a Sept. 1 news release, NASA said Blue Origin was selected to develop the agency’s Mars Telecommunications Network, or MTN. The agency said the firm-fixed-price contract “has a maximum potential value of approximately $700 million” and calls for Blue Origin to “design, develop, integrate, launch, and operate” the network. Under the award, the company is to deliver a high-performance Mars telecommunications orbiter to NASA no later than Dec. 31, 2028. NASA said the network is expected to be operational at Mars by 2030.

The spacecraft is meant to do more than add another orbiter around the planet. NASA said it is intended to provide “reliable, high-bandwidth communications and navigation services” for current and future Mars missions. That includes relaying science data, imagery, navigation information and mission communications for spacecraft on the Martian surface and in orbit. The project is managed by NASA’s Space Communications and Navigation program, known as SCaN.

The award matters because Mars communications are now heavily dependent on orbiters that were not built as a long-term, dedicated network. For years, key relay service has come from Mars Odyssey, launched in 2001; Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, launched in 2005; and MAVEN, launched in 2013. Those spacecraft have supported landers, rovers and orbital missions by passing data back to Earth, but NASA has been moving toward a purpose-built communications and navigation system that can support more demanding robotic missions and, eventually, possible human exploration.

The timeline is also notable. Congress shaped both the budget and the schedule through Public Law 119-21, enacted July 4, 2025, which provided the $700 million for the effort and set the delivery requirement in law. The enrolled bill said the orbiter “shall be delivered … not later than December 31, 2028.” That helps explain the compressed timetable and the use of a firm-fixed-price contract, which sets a price ceiling and places much of the cost risk on the contractor.

NASA’s procurement process culminated in a final request for proposals issued May 14, 2026. Eligibility was limited to companies that had previously received NASA funding in fiscal 2024 or 2025 for commercial Mars Sample Return design studies and, in those studies, had proposed a separate Mars telecommunications orbiter. NASA did not frame the award as a standalone spacecraft buy so much as the start of a dedicated Mars communications architecture.

If Blue Origin stays on schedule, NASA will have a new communications node at Mars by 2030, replacing dependence on older orbiters with a system specifically built to relay data, support navigation and serve as core infrastructure for the next generation of Mars missions. Blue Origin has publicly marketed a Mars Telecommunications Orbiter concept based on its Blue Ring in-space platform.
