Guild Wars 3 preview: ArenaNet outlines movement-focused MMO, fall 2027 beta

·

ArenaNet has offered its clearest public look yet at Guild Wars 3, outlining a movement-heavy, less cluttered massively multiplayer online game for PC and PlayStation 5, with the first beta planned for fall 2027.

The new details came in Sept. 3 preview coverage from GamesBeat and RPGSite after press sessions around Gamescom 2026. According to those reports, ArenaNet is pitching Guild Wars 3 as a “meaningful MMO” built around cleaner on-screen presentation, more action-RPG-style movement and positioning, contextual skills and “multiplayer combos” that reward coordination. The studio also described an open world designed to reduce loading screens and support both solo story play and multiplayer. In the preview sessions, movement reportedly included gliding and wall-running, with momentum carrying between traversal modes and a stamina meter limiting advanced movement abilities. GamesBeat and RPGSite also reported that ArenaNet said it wants smaller, more coordinated encounters rather than giant “zerg” battles, with roughly 20 players visible in combat as a design target.

Those gameplay specifics are new. Guild Wars 3 itself was first announced June 5 by NCSoft and ArenaNet at Summer Game Fest. Officially announced platforms are PC through ArenaNet’s client and Steam, plus PlayStation 5, marking the first time a Guild Wars game is planned for home consoles. ArenaNet has not announced a full release date, but its official site says betas will begin in fall 2027.

Official materials place the game in Orr, more than 1,000 years before the earlier Guild Wars games, with players taking the role of Vaelwardens. But the broader significance is that this is the first brand-new mainline Guild Wars game since Guild Wars 2 launched in 2012. The original Guild Wars debuted in 2005, and NCSoft and ArenaNet say the franchise has welcomed more than 29 million players.

RPGSite reported that its Gamescom developer session included about 11 minutes of recorded early alpha footage and a question-and-answer session with game director Colin Johanson and other developers. GamesBeat’s Sept. 3 preview likewise described a hands-off look at the project. Among the examples cited in preview coverage were a Necromancer using a scythe attack that steals life and a short-range reposition move, and a Ranger firing arrows while descending from a jump. Both outlets also reported ArenaNet said the game has been in development for about four years and that the team is about 350 people.

ArenaNet has also been explicit about the business model. Johanson said in a June 16 blog post that Guild Wars 3 “will be a buy-to-play game at release. There will be no subscription fee.” The company has also said there will be no battle pass subscription fee, a notable point for an MMO market where recurring charges are common. For now, though, the footage shown to press was pre-recorded and in early alpha, meaning the mechanics and scope discussed in preview sessions could still change before the planned 2027 beta.
