Sydney captain Callum Mills hurt knee in qualifying final; scans to determine extent

Sydney captain Callum Mills suffered a right knee injury in the first quarter of the Swans’ qualifying final win over Brisbane on Saturday, with coach Dean Cox saying the club is bracing for bad news as it awaits scan results.

“So, obviously not expecting great news on Callum, and in the next couple of days we'll find out the extent of that, which is devastating for him and the footy club,” Cox said post-match, via AFL.com.au.

The timing makes the injury especially significant. Sydney’s 53-point win at the SCG sent the Swans straight through to a home preliminary final in two weeks, giving them the finals advantage of a week off. But any absence for Mills, the club’s sole captain and a key on-field organizer, would be a major setback as Sydney prepares to face either Fremantle or Geelong. It also comes as the Swans are already dealing with availability issues after five club-imposed suspensions.

Mills was hurt in the opening quarter near the boundary line. AFL coverage said his knee “collapsed while changing direction on the boundary line.” He was clearly in pain, could not bear weight and needed assistance from trainers as he left the field. He was ruled out for the rest of the game, remained on the bench afterward and later departed on crutches.

Cox said the club did not yet know the full extent of the injury immediately after the match.

“It's a knee, yeah... We're not sure exactly the full extent of it, but yeah, it doesn't look good. We'll work out exactly what it is in the next day or two,” he said, via AFL.com.au.

There was no confirmed diagnosis at the time of reporting, with Sydney expected to get more clarity once Mills undergoes scans over the next couple of days.

The Swans were forced to adjust after losing their captain early, with Jake Lloyd moving back to cover the role left open by Mills’ exit. Sydney still controlled the match and finished with a commanding win over the Lions, securing a direct path to the preliminary final without needing to play again next week.

That break could be important as the club waits on the outcome of Mills’ scans and shapes its plans for one of its biggest games of the season. Mills became Sydney’s sole captain ahead of the 2024 season after previously serving in a co-captaincy arrangement, and his value extends beyond his own ball-winning to organizing the side around stoppages and in transition.

Mills did not offer any detail on the injury in his brief post-match comments, instead focusing on the result and the group around him.

“We'll figure it out later. It is what it is. I'm just so proud to be a part of this group. That was a special win. Sitting on the bench and being a part of it was incredible. I hope everyone here who felt it today feels the same because I'm really proud to be a Swan,” he told Channel Seven, as reported by AFL.com.au.

For now, Sydney has no confirmed diagnosis — only a significant injury concern hanging over its captain before a home preliminary final.
