Mojang to add The Sift — Minecraft’s first new dimension since 2011 — to Java and Bedrock in 2027

Mojang has confirmed that The Sift is coming to Minecraft Java and Bedrock in 2027, making it the game’s first new dimension since The End was added in 2011.

The announcement came during the Minecraft Live stream on Sept. 26, 2026, and was reiterated in Mojang’s official recap on Minecraft.net. Xbox Wire said the recap’s reference to “next year” means 2027 for the main sandbox game’s two primary editions.

In Minecraft, dimensions are parallel worlds with their own biomes and structures. That makes the addition of a new one a foundational change to the game rather than a routine update. Mojang said in its recap that this will be “the first new dimension in over 14 years.”

Mojang described The Sift as “beautiful, vibrant, and teeming with souls.” Players will be able to visit it first in Minecraft Dungeons II, the separate action role-playing spinoff, which launches Sept. 29, 2026, according to Xbox Wire. That rollout matters because The Sift is debuting in a spinoff before arriving in the mainline Java and Bedrock versions next year.

The reveal also formalizes something Mojang had already begun to show publicly. On Aug. 20, 2026, the developer named The Sift in a Minecraft Dungeons II gameplay trailer and companion post, saying, “Players who step through the rifts will enter the Sift, an entirely new dimension coming to Minecraft Dungeons II!”

What changed at Minecraft Live was confirmation that The Sift is not staying exclusive to Dungeons II. Mojang’s Sept. 26 recap made clear that the dimension is also headed to Minecraft Java and Bedrock Edition in 2027, elevating it from a spinoff setting to a coming addition for the core game.

That is the key development for Minecraft players. While Dungeons II and the original Minecraft share the same broader universe, they are different games with different formats. Dungeons II is an action-RPG, while Java and Bedrock are the main sandbox editions most players associate with Minecraft. The new dimension’s path from the spinoff to the core game is now official.

The End, Minecraft’s previous new dimension, arrived in 2011. Since then, Mojang has expanded the game in many other ways, but not by adding another dimension to the base experience. That is why The Sift stands out as a rare structural expansion rather than just another biome, block set or feature update.

Mojang has not announced a specific 2027 release date for The Sift in Java or Bedrock, and it has not attached the addition to a patch number or version number. For now, the confirmed timeline is that players will see The Sift first in Minecraft Dungeons II on Sept. 29, followed by the main Minecraft game sometime in 2027.
