Magnitude 6.0 Quake Strikes Near La Tronosa, Panama; No Immediate Reports of Major Damage

·

A shallow magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck 7 kilometers (4 miles) north of La Tronosa, Panama, at 04:14 UTC on Saturday, the U.S. Geological Survey said, the latest strong jolt in an ongoing earthquake sequence in the country. The quake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles). USGS estimated maximum shaking at intensity VIII on the Modified Mercalli scale, a level associated with severe shaking, and issued a Yellow alert on its PAGER system, which provides preliminary estimates of earthquake impacts.

As of 04:37 UTC, however, there were no authoritative official or news reports attributing deaths, injuries or major damage specifically to this magnitude 6.0 event. The USGS impact products indicated the potential for strong local effects, but no confirmed consequences from this quake had been publicly tied to the shock in the immediate aftermath.

The earthquake was part of the continuing Panama seismic sequence that began Oct. 9 with a much larger mainshock in the same broader region, followed by multiple strong aftershocks. That context is important because this was not an isolated event: authorities had already been monitoring the earlier quake activity and carrying out inspections. The shallow depth also helps explain why a magnitude 6.0 earthquake could produce very strong shaking near the epicenter even without immediate confirmed reports of major damage.

Earlier reporting on the broader sequence said Panama’s emergency authorities were conducting inspections after the Oct. 9 mainshock. Earlier official updates also said the Panama Canal remained in normal operation after checks, with only minor damage reported to non-navigational buildings from the earlier earthquake activity.
