Apple refreshes 14‑inch MacBook Pro with M6 chip, starts at $1,999
Apple on Tuesday announced a refreshed base 14-inch MacBook Pro with its M6 chip, a routine but important update to one of its core Mac laptops. The new model starts at $1,999 in the U.S., or $1,899 for education customers. Pre-orders begin Oct. 28 through Apple.com and the Apple Store app, with in-store availability and customer deliveries starting Friday, Nov. 6.
The update is not a redesign. Instead, Apple is keeping the familiar 14-inch MacBook Pro hardware and using the launch to emphasize faster performance, stronger on-device artificial intelligence features and updated wireless connectivity. Apple is also tying the machine closely to macOS 27, which its newsroom materials call Golden Gate, and to its broader Apple Intelligence push.
The new laptop uses Apple’s M6 chip, which the company says includes a 12-core CPU, 12-core GPU, a Dual 16-core Neural Engine and Neural Accelerators in the GPU cores. It starts with 16GB of unified memory, can be configured up to 32GB and offers memory bandwidth of up to 170 GB/s. Other headline specs include Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6, a Liquid Retina XDR display with an optional nano-texture finish, a 12-megapixel Center Stage camera with Desk View, and ports including MagSafe 3, HDMI, three Thunderbolt 4 ports, an SDXC card slot and a headphone jack.
Apple is making a particularly strong AI case for the M6. The company says the chip delivers up to 25% faster AI workloads than the M5, while the Dual 16-core Neural Engine offers up to 1.9 times faster performance than M5. Apple also says graphics are up to 30% faster than M5 and battery life reaches up to 24 hours, which it calls the longest ever in a Mac. Those figures come from Apple’s own October 2026 testing using Apple-selected configurations and benchmarks, and they have not yet been independently verified.
On the software side, Apple says the machine is built for Apple Intelligence features in macOS 27, including Siri AI and the ability to run large language models locally on the device. But Apple also says some Apple Intelligence and Siri AI features rely on server-side models, are subject to daily usage limits, and face regional and language availability restrictions, including caveats in the European Union.
The release also fills out Apple’s Mac lineup. Apple first introduced the M6 chip in August 2026 in the Mac mini, describing it at the time as its first 2-nanometer chip. In March, the company updated higher-end MacBook Pro configurations with M5 Pro and M5 Max chips. This week’s announcement brings the standard 14-inch MacBook Pro up to date.
“The 14‑inch MacBook Pro is the pro laptop of choice for a wide range of users — from college students, to business professionals across every industry, to multidisciplinary creators doing it all on one device,” Shelly Goldberg, Apple’s vice president of Hardware Engineering, said in Apple’s Oct. 27 press release. “With the powerful M6 chip, we’re taking performance to the next level, with a boost in CPU speed and graphics and even more powerful capabilities for on‑device AI.”
Apple also said the laptop contains 45% recycled content overall, including a 100% recycled aluminum enclosure, and that it is manufactured with 60% renewable electricity across its supply chain. Deliveries begin Nov. 6.
