General Motors said in a regulatory filing that Christopher T. Hatto, its chief accounting officer, plans to retire effective April 1, 2027, and will remain in the role until then as the automaker prepares for the transition.

In a Form 8-K filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Thursday, GM said: “On October 23, 2026, Christopher T. Hatto, Vice President, Global Business Solutions and Chief Accounting Officer of General Motors Company (the “Company”), notified the Company of his decision to retire, effective April 1, 2027 (the “Retirement Date”).”

The move matters because Hatto is GM’s principal accounting officer, a senior finance executive responsible for the company’s accounting and financial reporting. At a company GM’s size, a change in that role is relevant to investors even when it is planned and orderly.

The filing covered an event dated Oct. 23, 2026, the day GM said Hatto informed the company of his decision, and it was filed with the SEC on Oct. 29 under Item 5.02. GM said Hatto will stay in place through his retirement date and that it has not yet named his successor.

“Mr. Hatto will continue to serve as the Company’s principal accounting officer through the Retirement Date to support an orderly transition. The Company will announce the appointment of a successor principal accounting officer at a later date,” GM said in the filing.

GM also sought to make clear that the departure was not tied to any internal dispute. “Mr. Hatto’s decision to retire is not the result of any disagreement with the Company on any matter relating to the Company’s operations, policies or practices,” the company said.

Although the 8-K was filed under an SEC item that also covers some executive compensation matters, the text of GM’s filing did not disclose any new compensation, severance or retirement-pay arrangements connected to Hatto’s departure.

Hatto has served as GM’s chief accounting officer since 2018, making the change a transition in a longstanding senior finance post rather than a short-tenure exit.

For now, GM said only that Hatto will remain in the job through April 1, 2027, to support the handoff, and that it will name a successor principal accounting officer later.
